My Internet DEBATE With Dan Adams

3. 11/11/97 - Dan's First Rebuttal

It is not my intent in any way to deride Mr Lee's position as a Christian, and I do not wish to make any personal accusations, but we have agreed in this debate to be as frank, yet as mature as possible. After consideration, I have therefore chosen to respond to Mr Lee's opening statement by using it as an example of why I believe that many Christians believe in God because of the security, both moral and emotional, which they feel that it provides them.

Humans are mortal beings, and facing one's own mortality is the most frightening experience any human can face. It is I believe no coincidence that the vast majority of the World's religions involve a belief in an "afterlife" or reincarnation. Religion panders to our fear of mortality, our fear of inadequacy, our fear of life. When we go through "personal difficulty" as Mr Lee did, it is easy yes, to believe in God, to relish religion. It says "Its OK. You're not alone. There is a God and he is protecting you". A comfortable belief, but a false one. Being strong enough to overcome this belief is difficult. There is no reward, no advantage to atheism. You lose security. You realise that you are mortal and ultimately alone. But you also realise the wonder that is humanity. We are not some pet experiment of a divine being. We are as far as we know the only intelligent life form that has ever existed. That is wondrous. We are not perfect, for nothing can be, but we are alive. Sometimes, that is not appreciated enough. Whatever happens, you have had the experience of living. Yes, we will all die, but our deaths in turn produce life. Without death, there could be no life.

Every human is essentially part of the same planet. Atheism does not, as many religious leaders state, "corrupt society". What atheism does is make you realise "This is it. This is my one chance. And I better make as good a go of it as possible"

God does not exist, it is a myth perpetuated by the Churches of the World, to further their interests. The Catholic Church alone is the richest organisation in the World, and owns the most land in the World. It is time for people to realise that there is no God, but more importantly, that we do not need a God. Once you remove the emotional reasons for believing in God, there is little left.

What evidence is there actually to prove that God exists? I am unable at present to think of a single piece of evidence. There is of course the bible. That states that God exists. Of course, it also states that the Universe is only 6,000 years old. Thats interesting, because there is a creosote tree in existence which is more than 12,000 years old. There is also light reaching us from galaxies that are so far away that it would have taken their light millions of years to reach us. The bible is the only piece of evidence for the existence of God, and it is so deeply flawed as to be useless.
