1998 Hardrock 100
Race Day

Sylvia Weigand and her daughter pose with me at the Maxfield's
shop for a quick picture before the run starts. It is cold and rainy,
and mist covers the mountains.

We move outside to the start, and as the rain pours down upon us,
Dale Garland makes us sing "Happy Birthday" to Kristina.
The tune sounds like we had just gotten out of bed.

As the sun rises over the mountains and I make it to the
Cunningham Gulch Aid Station, I'm feeling strong and eating a
turkey sandwich (one of many).

Mile 31 find me still able to balance on a log.  I arrive into the
Sherman Aid Station in the middle of the afternoon.
I'm still feeling strong.

Carolyn Erdman stops me for a hug and a kiss before sending me
on my way to tackle Handies Peak, the highest point in the race
at 14,048 feet above sea level.
