Any attempt to summarize Jung's work does it a great misjustice. His theories are very complex and volumous.
        A student and collegue of Freud. They split over personal and professional reasons. One reason was Freud's emphasis on sex. Another was the nature of the unconscious and the role of dreams. Jung collected dreams from around the world and found that Freud's stages of development did not hold true globally.

        THEORY OF PERSONALITY

        EGO


        Equated with conscious or awareness.

        UNCONSCIOUS


        Equated with self. Jung believed within the unconscious exist a collective unconscious which we share with all of humanity.

        COLLECTIVE UNCONSCIOUS


        Archtypes, myths and symbols that appear in every culture. Regardless of meaning the symbol is the same.

        Dreams are representations of ones ego falling back into the unconscious.

        Persona Acceptable aspects of oneself.

        Shadow Unacceptable aspects of self. Dark, primitive, animal like instincts that man has inherited from his evolutionary ancestors.

        SYMBOLOGY OF DREAMS


        Jung believed dream symbols appeared to help you to become more aware, learn more about yourself and become more enlightened. He also believed that dreams were an essential way of understanding our development.

        In psychotherapy one would become aware of their own unconscious.

        SIGNIFICANCE OF DREAMS AND DREAM SYMBOLS


        Any dream symbol can be all 3

        1. Personal Myth- Archtypes which represent the energy we expend in social roles. One can arrive at satisfactory meaning once an association to a certain memory from personal history, contacts and interactions is found to represent a particular symbol. A personal symbol's meaning can change.

        2. Cultural Myth- differs from personal in that there is more permanence. These myths or symbols are derived from the cultural context in which one is raised.

        3. Universal Myths- Fairy tales are the best example of universal myths. The wicked witch, fair princess as well as the galant prince are found in one form or another in every culture.

        Anima Is the term given any object represented as feminine.

        Animus Is the term given any object represented as masculine.

        The old wise man and old wise women are also found in every culture.

        Compensation


        Process by which the psyche attempts to gain balance by developing an awareness of neglected aspects of the personality. These neglected aspects can be found in dream symbols

        Amplification


        Process by which the dreamer gives a series of continuing sequential associations to an isolated element of their dream.

        Objective A dream object is considered objective when it reflects an external object or person.

        Subjective A dream object which represents some part of the dreamers own personality.



        THE SEQUENCE OF A DREAM


        A dream unfolds in correspondance with the stages of problem solving. The material is unconsciously selected by the dreamer in waking life.

        1. The dream opens with a statement, expressed with metaphors, saying "Here is the problem or issue I am currently struggling with".

        2. Next, the dream will indicate how the dreamer is currently dealing with the problem.

        3. And finally, the ending of the dream states possible solutions the dreamer may use to cope with the issue presented in the opening scene.
