After reaching our parking spot we legged it into the paddock to scrounge
breakfast at BMW Sauber. The atmosphere in the paddock was now really
different. Sure there was the expected rise in the tension level but now the
paddock itself was so crowded with posers that it made it a little uncomfortable
for me.
I soon learned though that their time there
was strictly limited so that was something to look forward to and I always had
the sanctuary of the team centres to relax in.
Leo, Peter and Oliver were going to be really
busy today in the media centre so I was on my own, but they had trained me well
and I had the right pass and my tabard so I headed for my favourite spot…. the
first chicane. But this time it was different. For the first time I saw
and heard 22 cars coming through there in anger and this was something else
altogether.
Some of them got it right and a few of them
got it wrong so for the first two laps the marshals efficiently swept away small
bits of cars before they all arrive around for the second time. Even by
now the cars were spread out a lot but then David Coulthard had a fairly big
accident and the safety car came out… with Bernd at the wheel. On TV it doesn’t
look like he’s going fast but now I knew he was!!
After the first pit stops I headed for the
media centre which was located just above the pits. There I could watch the end
of the race and feel the excitement as the cars entered and exited the pits in
those vital moments.
So it was over. One of the most exciting
weekends of my life and one which I won’t forget for a long time!
Strangely, the “music” of the weekend lingers
in my ears and I am wondering if something else may come of this………
As we say
in Spain….”vamos a ver”!
God bless,
Ken
