Five Days on The Radio ….. A Quick Reflection
It's a long,
long time since I did a "tour" of radio stations anywhere and I have never done
one in Germany so I knew this trip was going to be a challenge! Actually I think
the last one I did was in 1973 when I travelled America with Jo Bergmann from
Warner Brothers to promote "Eager To Please" on US radio.
This one was
different from the start because the plan was to focus on "public" radio
stations in major cities which are government funded, huge organisations with
the largest audiences and the right demographics. In my case (or, rather, in the
case of my music) that's 35-50 year old adults.
In five days
we covered 9 major cities, 15 radio stations and a lot of kilometers, by car,
train and plane and in the end the only pain I had was a sore butt! I was "sitting"
everywhere…. on the planes, on the trains and in the cars and in the stations…
and it still hurts!
I like doing
interviews anyway because I always learn something and I love to talk about
music and life in general but this was especially interesting for me because I
was working with the station heads or music chiefs and they had all done their
research and it helped a lot that many of them (though not all) had grown up
with my music.
I played "Lady
In Black" 10 times and an acoustic version of "We´re On Our Way" and in Berlin I
played a one hour mini-solo-concert for 200 invited guests which was broadcast
the following day.
At the end I
was tired but Gaby Mularczyk and her team had done a fantastic job so I was
really pleased with the way it all went.
Now I am in
Frankfurt, preparing to fly to Iceland for two shows with Eirikur, for an
audience I have never seen before and that's exciting.
When I get
back here on Friday I'll be preparing for the last event of this tour, another
mini radio concert on May 5th at SWR1 in Mainz, this time supported by some
fantastic German musicians and of course I have the ZDF TV show "Fernsehgarten"
(literally "television garden") on May 4th, where Maks & The Minors will be my "band"…..
So I'll finish
the tour diary when this is all done.
The live DVD
is released on May 2nd… this is a very happy and exciting time!!
God bless,
Ken
