September 19th 2003

For me at least, today was all about relaxing and preparing for the madness to come. Monica and the guys went shopping, accompanied by Andrei, my driver, who should write a book on his driving technique!! But he is a gem of a guy and we did feel safe with him!!

Sound check was difficult for a number of reasons but the show was fantastic. The audiences here are still quite new to what is referred to a “western” rock music and knowing that has helped me to pace the show very effectively.

Being able to sit with my Dobro for two solo songs in the middle of the show is a pleasure I probably wouldn’t be able to enjoy in most other places. It just seems that the audience is as focussed as we are and during the last 25 minutes of the show the energy level just goes up and up!! It’s a great feeling to perform for such a responsive and appreciative audience and, though I was exhausted by the end of it, this had been a special night.

But then we had to move fast to catch the overnight train to Harkov. We were all pretty tired so the celebrations were short and it was time to grab a few hours sleep before arriving in Harkov at 6:30am!!

Next day...
