E-Heep

June 22nd 2004

What a contrast! Everything went according to plan today and we actually exceeded our goals for the day, which is more than can be said for the Italians in Portugal!! Sorry! England are playing Portugal next so the potential is there for me to eat my own humble pie!! But I digress… again!

First we re-cut the bass on Sweet Freedom so it would include the correct part at the end of the third verse and then Weep in Silence, changing the key to B minor, as I mentioned before. Alexei is an excellent bass player and, as is really typical of these players, he came to the studio prepared and well practised, so this went very smoothly and quite quickly.

Next up was harmonies and some backing vocals and we began with Alik working with me on July Morning and Easy Living. My biggest concern about this was not pitch or timing but pronunciation though this wasn't a problem in the end. Where there were words that caused problems, Egor stepped in as coach and I was really pleased with the results. And I wanted to add some female voices to create different colours so in the evening I worked with Irina who is a veteran studio singer and has a very flexible voice… and a great attitude. The fact that she spoke some English was helpful too and we ended the day with some really great sounding backing vocal tracks.

Tomorrow we are recording the new live version of Lady In Black and totally new arrangements of Free me and Stealin' so I'll need to change gears a little bit. It'll be a new and different challenge but one I am looking forward to. Also the MTV cameras will be visiting in the evening so I hope there's something left of me by the time they get there!

Dinner in the studio was relaxed. We were all tired so by 10:00 it was time to go back to the hotel and rest. I confess that I am a bit homesick already. I miss Monica and the dogs and cats (and the rabbit, but not so much!) but time is flying so I will keep in the back of my mind that the light at the end of the tunnel is getting closer! Good night!

Next day...
