Getting to the studio early I was able to send some stuff to Rod and do a reference vocal and some Moog work on the Andromeda before the singers arrived.

We had to figure out how to get them the right balance in their headphones so they could record together (on separate tracks of course). On this particular track (Sweet Freedom) it worked out better to record each of them separately. And Pro Tools helped too!

One of the hardest things to do is to teach someone who is mainly a lead vocalist to sing harmony! It's such a different discipline and I don't think people really understand that until they are under the critical focus of the studio. Then things like pronounciation and timing become every bit as important as pitch, especially when you have two or three singing at the same time. It required a lot of patience but, as you will hear, the results are definitely worth it. It was actually quite funny being a conductor (no Trevor, not on a London bus!) but they couldn't work without one so I did my best and we have the film to prove it!

Then it was Igor's turn to put some guitar magic on a few tunes. I mentioned earlier how much I like his playing style and he has dealt with the solo work in his own way whilst making respectful reference to the origins of what he was covering. I hope that makes sense here… I am sure it will when you hear it!!

And so we began to wind down for the day and for this batch of sessions. I don't think time flies anywhere the way it does in a recording studio but we have had a solid 10 days and accomplished a lot. Tomorrow morning Sasha will do some reference mixes for me to work with before I come back and then I'll be off to the airport to argue with Aeroflot about excess baggage. It's always strange how they don't charge on the way here but, for exactly the same amount of luggage, somehow justify charging an unearthly amount for the trip back!!

Time now for our evening ritual of snacks and a glass of wine (usually Romanian or Georgian and not usually very exciting) and then to the hotel to finish packing.

It's been a gruelling ten days but I always enjoy myself in the studio and I am looking forward to reflecting on this experience. I'll be back in July to finish, mix and master volume 1. Meanwhile, if anything interesting happens tomorrow I'll let you know!

God bless,
Ken
