"Sunrise Over The Kremlin"
Day 1
The National
Hotel is one of Moscow's oldest but, unlike many other old hotels here, it has
been maintained to the very highest standard. (No shower cap though, I am glad I
brought my own!)
From the
window of my suite I can see the Kremlin at a distance of about 250 metres and
right now the sun is rising over the roof of the history museum.
Yesterday, the
square between here and the Kremlin was full of people and the lines to take a
tour were long and mainly filled with foreigners.
Last night,
from one of the windows in the restaurant, I had a clear view of young people in
the square, discovering love and the busy main street below was, well, busy.
I did notice
that most of the millions of cars that routinely clog up Moscow's lamentably
inadequate roads were quite new and very shiny. Someone is doing okay….
A couple of
city policemen attended a minor accident in the middle of the street and I
wondered why people find stationary panic so attractive and worthy of their
time.
People move
differently when they are angry or flustered.
I am here
as the guest of The Moscow City Government and The Russian Orthodox Church and I
will be attending a youth camp on Lake Seliger, about 5 hours drive (or so I am
told) from here. The event is educational and lasts a few weeks but my visit
will be quite short. I will be meeting a lot of people and playing and singing
for an audience far younger than I am used to. The music will have to speak for
itself, as it usually does.
