May 1st 2004
So now the EU is 10 countries bigger and we are
heading towards one of the newest members
Poland. Kaliningrad
is in Russia but it is bordered by Poland, Lithuania, Estonia and
it is a very westernised city. They seem to be very active in their
re-building, the roads are of a generally better standard (although
that's not hard to accomplish!) and the cars look newer etc. usually
signs of an active economy and the people did seem very enthusiastic.
When our plane landed, we were met by cars and vans and people so
we were able to whizz out of the airport without the usual formalities
and take the 22km drive to the hotel. People greeted us everywhere
and it felt really good
although I didn't!!
Speaking of the EU
do you remember when the EEC became official
and the EU was established as the world's largest trading block
(or maybe you don't care
)? That was when President Bush senior
activated NAFTA, annexing Canada and Mexico to retrieve first place
in world trade (and where do the media get off referring to the
statesmen of the world as "Bush" or "Blair"
or whatever?
I bet they don't call their bosses by their surnames!
Doesn't matter one bit whether you like them or their politics,
they deserve courtesy in this respect at least).
Now that the EU has the lead again is it any wonder that President
Bush junior has revived talks on the organisation of South American
States?? It's a drag being number two
especially if you are
American! So what does that have to do with anything? Not much really
but it just popped into my aching head! (am I whining too much
does anybody actually care?)
Almost 1800 people packed into the venue and it was heaving!! They
all joined in on Lady in Black and it was pleasantly deafening.
I had to use all the tricks to get by certain parts of the show
as my voice was really suffering. But we made it and the crowd loved
it (actually I think it was the prayers that worked, they somehow
always do
but that's just my opinion).
Dinner was great and
finally
a chance to sleep in a
bed that isn't moving
but not for long!
Next day...
