DIA CUATRO
(I'm going to run out of languages soon!)

At last… a good night's sleep!! Probably because the bus wasn't moving, but I am grateful for it anyway!! The sun is shining, the sound and light truck are here and I am sitting here in the back lounge writing to you! Tonight will be a bit crazy I think… Berlin is where Sony's head office is and Jens Frerichs, our agent, is also based here so we are expecting to meet a lot of people tonight!

That's all fine and well of course but it's you guys I care about most so I am hoping for a good crowd because this is a great venue! The name is "Sound" and it's a very typical Berlin club… all black and industrial, with lots of silver metal around. Apparently we played for Rainer at the previous "Sound" club in a different location but that was in 1974 and I don't remember that at all!!! Funny thing… we are quite a long way from the city, so it's a bit like playing in Berlin without ever actually seeing it!

It's time to do a little work, take a shower and get ready for the day so I'll be back a bit later………

The atmosphere here has been very relaxed all day as we hung out in the car park!! Martin and John Wetton arrived from London and the catering arrived and we had a fairly straight forward sound check. The room is big and boomy but a few people will help that. Perhaps the worst thing was that, even though the building itself is huge, the stage is actually quite small and a difficult shape. The opening band, "Mother's Little Helpers" arrived and set up, Knut from Sony arrived and gave me all the latest scores from the World Cup (I guess Brazil got lucky eh Rod??) and we began to get ready for the show.

This was a difficult show. The opening act moved my B3 and that's always trouble so things weren't in sync from the start. Then Ade got food poisoning and was very ill!! He had to leave the sound board (Paul was able to fill in for him fortunately but, at the time, none of us on stage knew what was going on at all!). The sound on stage was definitely weird and we never really settled down so, for once, we had to settle for less than our best and none of us was very happy about that!

The strange thing in these situations is that the audience generally doesn't know all this is going on and so the crowd reaction was excellent but we have already begun to set very high standards and we had to spend some time "encouraging" each other afterwards. I know I always report the good things but I don't think it hurts to share the not-so-good things too. Life on the road is challenging and these things happen but it will make us stronger for tomorrow… as it should!!

Next day...
