The Atha’an Miere

It was during the Breaking of the World that the ancestors of the Atha’an Miere first fled to the sea.  These people knew little of the sea, but they recognized that no place on land remained safe.

Over the course of generations, the Atha’an Miere, learned the ways of the sea and became one with their vessels.  The Sea Folk are always born on the water, and die on the water if at all possible.  It was during these early

years in the history of the Sea Folk that the Jendai Prophecy was first spoken - that the People of the Sea were fated to wander the seas until the return of the Coramoor.

The Atha’an Miere have an exotic appearance, enlivened by colorful clothing and tattoos on their hands, as well as gold and silver jewelry.  Sea Folk women are known as the epitome of seductiveness and grace.  Undoubtedly, the Sea Folk custom of wearing nothing above the waist while away from port only enhances the reputation of these beautiful women.

These women frequently wear a ring in the left side of their nose.  Women of rank wear a fine chain connecting nose and ear rings, with medallions worn on the chain.  Women of higher rank have larger numbers of medallions decorating their chain.

The Sea Folk are governed by a very strict chain of command, governing clan and sept.

The Atha’an Miere were untroubled by the Trolloc Wars and the War of the Hundred Years, leaving them free to perfect their seagoing technologies.  As a result, the Sea Folk sail ships far superior to anything the mainlanders possess.  It is this superiority which helps the Atha’an Miere maintain their dominance in trade.

The Sea Folk view each ship as gifted with a man’s heart and a man’s courage, and as such refer to their ship as “he,” not “she.”  Each ship is lovingly built by the crew which will eventually sail him.

Any person may ask for passage on a Sea Folk ship.  But the Sea Folk do not accept payment for this passage.  Instead, they give the gift of passage in return for a gift from one wishing to travel on their ship.  These two gifts are coincidentally of the same value.  None may be refused the gift of passage save Aes Sedai, who are almost always refused the gift of passage.  This is not out of any dislike for Aes Sedai, but out of concern that the White Tower might discover that the Sea Folk Windfinders are women able to channel the One Power.
