This is the End?

If Man brought all his earnings,
varied 'selfless' deeds and learning,
to court above his stiffening flesh
would it really be worth anything?

Could Man shame humanity more
if, piously, he boldly shouts -
Guess I'll be your buddy, Jesus,
though our 'truth' be simply doubt?

Or if Man craves a bloodless token
to hang before his weakened eyes
will he struggle on the narrow path
or wander the wider path of lies?

Will Man breech the ramparts of heaven
or create even a single, living cell
by shrieking from the Temple's tower -
Adam was fiction, Man never fell!?

If all such fraud to weakened flesh
seems to flood now in unity,
what sorrow pours upon the children
who recite - depair is never holy?
