CORNERS

Around the corner of every man
Are visions of the past
And those are still his memories
Today instead your task.

Reach out with understanding eyes
Touch another with a smile
Share a Soldier’s life today
And talk with him awhile.
Reassure him of tomorrows
Never tarry on that thought
Who knows what waits around the corner
Today would be for naught.

There’s much to do at morning’s light
Still more with each sunset
Around the corner, tomorrows yes
But plans today are set.

Quite soon today’s a memory
Yesterday it has become
With tomorrow on a sunlit ridge
A new today begun.

And here the task begins anew
To touch another’s soul
To listen to their memories
Two lives today are whole.

And when you turn that future corner
Sometime in future year
You’ll smile upon the gift today
That each man holds so dear.

Night Patrol

Some nights when I awake in fear
The thunder rolling from silent skies
In darkened room my 'Brothers' near
Stare back with young and vacant eyes.

Sometimes their voices call to me
The soldiers of forgotten war
In unison they cry out loud
Remember us for evermore.

The sights, smells and sounds since gone
Forgotten battles of long since past
In vivid room they play 'till dawn
Until they march away at last.

You'd think with years this man would age
To understand the price back then
Except these feelings in the cage
Resurface time and time again.

I accept the simple fact
Won't ever leave me all alone
Steadfastly loyal, watch my back
Young soldiers,
Welcome to my Home.
