She grows food for use in the Neelix's kitchen.  The crop yields haven't been enough to totally feed Voyager, but does reduce the amount of replicated food.  She splits her time between gardening and sickbay, where she is undergoing "on the job training" in medicine.

The Doctor recruited Kes' help in the sickbay, where her amazing memory has made her an excellent student.  Her compassion for the patients is overwhelming, and she often offers to help them out in any way possible.

Kes' life on Voyager has also helped her develop her formerly untapped mental abilities.  She has shown signs of a telepathic nature, and has even been aware of alternate timeloops.  Kes has sensed alien intruders when they were invisible, and her abilities have made her resistant to alien mind control. Tuvok has become her instructor on mental exercises and has helped her develop her beginning skills. This has not been without consequence though, her abilities once went awry and she almost killed Tuvok.  Kes has said Tuvok has been like a father to her.  She loved her father, Benarem, very much and was quite close to him until he died when she was one year old.
