The Diskworld RPG, diceless or otherwise, isn't about numbers, stats and dice, its about a group of people who togther, try to create a story that will be told for generations on the streets of Anhk-Morpork, or at least set the barflies snickering into their mead until the next idiot tries something mindlessly heroic. The GURPS version spends a great deal of time (okay, six paragraphs) stressing the power of metaphor, and Narrative Causality within the Diskworld setting. Translated here into five worlds : the story is all important. While working to tell this story, the Stats and other accoutrements serve only as guidelines within which to set the story, and boundaries that the define what the characters can and cannot do. A character with a high Smarts stat can con a character with a lower Smarts stat, a Wizard with 200 points in their Magic skill, knows more magic than a beginner witch with 50. Your Scuffle Stat won't help you much if you are dueling with Cohen the Barbarian, so you might want to try running away (Toughness Stat) or even outwitting him (using the Smarts Stat) keeping in mind that he's seen every trick in the book, then likely tore it up and used it as a firestarter. So once you've created a character and committed their stats to paper, toss it to the GM and promptly ignore them. The only thing that is important is playing in character. It is up to the GM to remember all the technical details, which combined with actually guiding the story seems like a bit much, so always remember to bring them the beverage of their choice, and the occasional concert tickets. |

How to Play this Game Stats, Skills, Defects and Stuff Races, Creatures of the Night and Assorted Beasites. The Lore of Magic Links and Rings |
Read through the Skills and Defects section and decide which ones you think would apply to your character. Skills cost points, while Defects can add them, so once you've decided, add up the pluses and minuses. The remaining points become your pool from which to Bid on stats. Or if you want to bid on stats then choose your skills, that is fine too. |

Each stat is bid on individually. The Gamemaster starts by announcing which of the four Stats is to be bid on. Each player then writes on a scrap paper their opening bid, the amount of points they want to spend on this Stat. The GM then marks down each player's bid and announces only the number of the highest bid. The players can then decide if they want to bid more points towards the stat. (Note: the bids don't have to be higher than the highest bid. If the player just wants to put a few more points into the Stat just to make it comparable that is fine.) Once all the players have finished bidding, the GM declares the bid closed and moves on to the next stat. Note that once a point is bid, the point is lost. You cannot decide later that you'd like to lower a stat bid to recoup some points. |
