First seen on Stardate 50564.2 in the episode "By Inferno's Light", the Breen have yet to show their faces outside of the refrigeration suits that distinguish them from other races. The Federation know little to nothing of the Breen, and stories are spread of how no ship ever went into Breen space and returned. The Breen usually are reclusive, not willing to involve themselves in the political affairs of the Quadrant, but they joined the Dominion when they promised them the Federation in return for their services.

The Breen wear an all-covering refrigeration suit while outside of their homeworld. Since no reliable reports had ever returned from Breen, most conjecture that the Breen only tolerate cold temperatures, and that they might be furry inside of the suits. The Vorta Weyoun once divulged that the Breen didn't really need those refrigeration suit, and that may imply that the Breen wish not to be seen in their original state. Besides looking menacing, the suit also disguises their voices, making it sound to others a grating electronic noise much like radio static at high frequency.
Nothing, unfortunately, is known of Breen society. The Breen military is efficiently run, and headed by a conscientious general, which would indicate a society with a high sense of morality. But they are also xenophobic and unpredictable, which contributed to the Romulan adage, "Never turn your back on a Breen."
Only recent Breen history, specifically their role in the latter stages of the Dominion War, is better known to the Federation. They joined the Dominion in 2373, having been promised a large share of the Alpha Quadrant once the Dominion won the war, including Earth and the Federation. Their battle cruisers converged on Cardassia and helped attack the Federation once the alliance was sealed, sucessfully recapturing the Chin'Toka System lost to the Federation the year before. Armed with a technology unknown to the rest of the Quadrant, the Breen picked off the Federation, Klingon, and Romulan forces with ease, and cut a swathe all the way to San Francisco, Starfleet Headquarters, before they were stopped. The Dominion were well pleased with the Breen firepower and ordered all Jem'Hadar ships to be equipped with the energy dissipator weapon.
| Breen and Cardassian ships. | The Federation scrambled to find countermeasures, their efforts helped by Colonel Kira and Legate Damar, who stole one of the weapons from a Jem'Hadar shipyard. When the Federation developed a successful means to defend themselves against the Breen weapon, the Dominion responded by drawing themselves back into a tight defensive line around Cardassia Prime. Captain Sisko persuaded Starfleet and the Klingon/Romulan forces to end the war now instead of letting the Dominion rebuild. So the final battle began in Cardassia Prime's orbit. The Breen general Thot Gor personally oversaw the battle from his ship, and there were heavy casualties on both sides. The Romulan line collapsed shortly into the battle, and it was an evenly fought battle when the female founder called off the attack and surrendered to the joint Federation, Klingon, and Romulan forces.
