First off, I have been a fan of this title since it began, so I won't drop it unless it gets REALLY bad. I know it got close to that with Hama's recent issues (Think: Pooka), but it just might actually start getting better. I think Hama is trying to get Generation to resemble Gen13, but he's not pulling it off. So, on with the review. Main Rant About the Whole Series: Jubilee is not 13 *, she's 15!!!!!!!
Run-Down:
Angelo (Skin), Jono (Chamber), and Everett (Synch) rent a couple dozen 'slasher' flicks. The girls complain about it, but they grab some snacks and start watching anyway. The topic comes up about Jubilee being 13 * (She's 15, dogspammit!! **grumble grumble**), and how she shouldn't watch these horror movies (Two years makes a BIG difference, man!! **grumble grumble**). Everett mentions 'terminal dream' something or other, and sorta freaks Jubilee out. Jubilee convinces them to let her watch the movies, however, and the blood-fest begins. Well, Jubilee apparently dozed off during this slasher marathon, and wakes up all alone on the couch. She wakes up, and goes off to look for the others, but sees a little old lady with a knife(Norman's Mom from "Psycho") at the top of the stairs. She runs into Angelo, and they follow the little old lady together. Ole Granny goes into the bathroom and stares through the shower curtain at Paige taking a shower (Whoo-hoo!), who is singing what seems to be Spice Girls songs (**puke**). Granny pulls the curtain aside, and goes to stab the naked Paige (You don't see anything but some skin, fanboy. Get your mind out of the gutter!). She husks to brick, and Jubilee attacks Granny, who pulls off a wig, and reveals herself to be Bastion, that white-haired, pupil-less, son-of-a-bastitch! And he's strapped with some dynamite. Jubilee and Skin exit hastily and the bathroom goes boom. Paige is dead. **sniff**
So Jubilee and Angelo talk about dreaming, and Jubilee realizes she is dreaming. She's afraid that if she dies in her dream she'll die In Real Life. So, they go back INTO the bathroom, and Jubilee tries to wake herself up with water. While doing this, that Freddy Kreuger freak shows up. Only it's really Sabretooth dressed like Freddy. Skin tries to fight him, and he getsÉhow should I say this? Torn into a buncha itty-bitty pieces. Jubilee runs past a complacent Monet, who is treated to the same massage that Skin got. Ouch. Jubilee recruits Penance to get Freddy Kreuger/Sabretooth, and Penance dices the poor schmuck into little bite-sized pieces.
But it's not over yet. See, while Penance took care Freddy Kreuger/Sabretooth, It seems that some white-faced maniac (I do believe its Jason) with an axe snuck up behind Jubilee. But, it's Omega Red in that Jason mask. Anyway, Penance is treated to an axe blade in the head, and Jason/Omega Red chases Jubilee down the hall. But look! It's Chamber, and he can help! So Chamber nukes Jason/Omega Red. But while he's still on fire, Jason/Omega Red whacks poor old Jonothan Starsmore. Jubilee runs. Again.
This time, she runs in to Everett (not that theres many people left. In fact, Everett IS the only other one left) in the kitchen. But that dude from Texas Chainsaw Massacre shows up. And this time, itŐs Emplate under that mask. Well anyway, Ev' synchs with Jubee (and says she has "chump" powers. Grrrrrr.) and attacks Chainsaw Man/Emplate. While heŐs doing this, Jason/Omega Red whacks Everett in the back of the head with his axe. Then, Freddy Kreuger/Sabretooth and Bastion/Norman's Mom pop up out of the floor. They corner Jubilee, and just as they were gonna go in for the kill, she wakes up. Jubilee sees the others standing around her, worried. She realizes theyŐre hiding something behind her back, and she sees that it's Halloween masks (they were gonna scare her, silly.).
Writing Factor: Scripts: Larry Hama
Actually a GOOD issue compared to what Hama has been turning out lately. We saw that the stuff she's been through doesn't just shrug-off because of the way major enemies were "portraying" Horror Flick characters. Characterization was okay, they all seemed more light-hearted than usual, which would actually be more accurate then having them all angsty like the adult X-Men. I think they would have to cope by being light-hearted, because they arenŐt problem solvers yet. Anyway, the story plot was good, maybe a bit cliched. I actually enjoyed this issue. Overall Writing Rating: 7
Art Factor: Guest Pencils: Ale Garza Guest Inks: Cabin Boy Colors: Felix Serrano
Better than DodsonŐs has been! I would actually LIKE having Garza pencil GenX on a regular basis. His style is pretty much all eye-candy. Though a few weird shots made me do double takes. Like on Page (not Counting the pages that are advertisements) 17. Jubilee steps in front of an empty glass apothecary jar that was sorta angled. At first glance I must admit that I thought Jubilee had grown really bigÉbosomsÉin the matter of a few panels. But mostly his work had a lot of great perspectives. Garza gets an 8.
Cabin Boy's inks were actually really well done. If there were anything he could've done better, than I missed it. A lot of good, solid lines, no weird wrinkles were added. Cabin Boy gets a 10. Overall Art Rating: 9
