Polaris

Real Name: Lorna Dane

First App: Uncanny X-Men #49

With the ability to manipulate magnetism, Lorna Dane was initially though to be the daughter of Magneto. As Iceman's girlfriend, Lorna became an X-Man for a time in the early days before the all-new, all-different X-Men were created. While on the team, Lorna was introduced to Havok aka Alex Summers. Getting to know eachother, the two soon found they had similar desires. Neither wanted to dedicate their life to superheroing, instead, the pair wanted to settle down somewhere and live 'normal' lives. As they fell in love, they planned to attend graduate school in New Mexico. Becoming archaeologists (I believe so anyway, I could be mistaken), they began their life in a rather remote part of desert where the iron ore was plentiful and Polaris had increased control of the enviroment. Here, the two lived as normal lives as they could, always ready to help should the X-Men need them, but, for the time being, retired from being heroes.

When Havok left briefly to seek out his brother Scott, he left Polaris alone at their house. As he searched and eventually found the X-Men instead of Cyclops, Polaris had her own encounter with mutants. The murderous mutant hunters known as the Marauders were sent by Mr. Sinister to kill Polaris... or so they believed. Fleeing from Sabretooth, Arclight, and Scalphunter, Polaris was on her own turf. The ground responded to the merest touch of her power and she fought frantically for her very survival. Yet injured in the intial blast as she was, her focus was off and the Marauders were too intense for her to handle. But even as she began to dispair, oblivion came to her. As the Marauders watched on, Polaris seemed to gain a second wind. The grounds opened blow them, trapping Arclight, Sabretooth was throttled and Scalphunter fell before her. In an intense burst of light, Polaris re-made her costume and glared down at the startled hunters. Thinking her about to kill them, they soon realized that Polaris had been possesed by Malice and intended to lead the Marauders. Apparently, Malice had entered Lorna at the airport when she dropped of Alex.

In the following months, Polaris led the Marauders with deadly efficiency, combatting the X-Men numberous times. When she first encountered Havok, she quite happily tried to kill him and when that failed, proceded to make him attempt to kill her. Knowing her sheilds could stop his plasma blasts, she allowed him to live with the knowledge he had tried to kill the love of his life.

Many months later, after the X-Men had brutally attacked the Marauders during Madelyne Pryor's Inferno and threatened to kill Polaris if there was no way to rid Lorna of Malice's influence, the X-Men recieved a call from Lorna. Though Lorna Dane and Malice had been perfectly compable, the effects had seemingly weakened and Lorna was herself once again, though traces of Malice still lingered. When the X-Men, only four remained at that point, arrived, Polaris had been taken prisoner by the woman named Zaladane. Claiming to be Lorna's sister, Lorna was an adopted child, she kidnapped Polaris to the Savage Land with Havok pretending to be a soldier.

With Havok watching on, Lorna's powers were leeched out of her and given to Zaladane. The feat was only possible due to the pair being sisters, as claimed Moira MacTaggert. Havok was revealed and the two were imprisoned. Though the X-Men rescued the pair and defeated Zaladane, Polaris did not regain her powers. Instead, the transfer had seemingly given her a set of all new powers. Imbued with super-strength and invulnerability, Polaris grew to a massive size, dwarfing Havok.

Left by herself after Havok went through the Seige Perilous, right after saving her from Zaladane, she settled on Muir Island and became a member of an impromptu group of X-Men. Barely after their creation, the Reavers decimated the team, and were only barely driven off by Freedom Force after many deaths. After the battle, Polaris was secretly trapped in a mutant X cell. The trapped mutant was reported extremely dangerous and without any external help, Polaris had no way of freeing herself. Her tormentor was David Haller, Charles Xavier's son, possesed by the Shadow King. Upon her transformation, Polaris had also become a focus of negative energy. Using her as a conduit, the Shadow King could expand his telepathic powers over the earth and began to work the world into a frenzy. When the combined might of the X-Men and the original X-Factor faced down the Shadow King, it was Psylocke's psi-blade that severed her connection to the Shadow King and brought about his ruin.

Along with Havok, Multiple Man, StrongGuy, Wolfsbane and Quicksilver, Lorna joined the goverment sponsored X-Factor, hoping to make mutant activities less cloak and dagger and more public knowledge. As a big name 'gee-cee', Polaris appeared on talkshows and graced the newspapers often. Yet despite all the press, X-Factor was still considered by many Americans to be freaks or worse.

Her relationship with Havok did not prosper, indeed, it collapsed as Havok left suddenly multiple times and on occasion became a villian (though really an undercover hero). When she finally confronted him recently, she stated in no uncertain terms that they would not be getting together again. Whether she still harbors feelings for him isn't clear, but as a new X-Factor reformed, Havok was seemingly killed in a plane explosion. His last orders before his 'death' were that should anything happen to him, the leadership of X-Factor was Polaris'. She may choose to continue with X-Factor or she may retire again to living as normal a life as is possible for any former X-Men...
