The Quarters

ELEMENTS

The physical world consists of the four physical elements.
A wiccan circle is created in this physical world by the actions that we have already described on our Magick Circles page, in relation to the elements. Up to that point, the circle stands as a physical object defined by the elements.

The influencial projection of the circle is then modified by what is called: Hailing the Quarters, Setting the Wards, Calling the Watchtowers, or other terms such as Guardians, Elemental Rulers, ect.

The magickal idea is to project the contents of the circle to a state defined as in-between the worlds, meaning between the physical and spiritual or etheric worlds. To do that, wiccans quarter the circle by direction, and assign (most generally)

This action seperates the elements on the physical plane of the mind. Our minds work on both levels, physical and spiritual. By this action, we put our minds into the spiritual or etheric realm. While we are present in physical form, we are able to affect the spiritual while in this state of mind. The physical world relies upon the spiritual world for direction, while the spiritual world relies upon the physical world for experience through connection and perception.

To perform this elemental seperation requires mental symbology. This symbology can be in many forms, but keeping track of these forms takes practice. It is recommended that persons new to the craft learn to associate either a color or a form for each one of the four elements. This process will be expanded upon in time, as the Great Wheel of the Year turns.

Before following the next link, get out a pencil or open a word program and write down what each of the four elements mean to you....list each one and think of what meanings they might have or what they represent.
