of dreams and destinies
by rhiannon macgregor & steve smith

i have wandered my days,
this tree of life.
squandering my hours,
on inconsequentials.

it may have been different,
had i chosen with wisdom.
it may have been different
had i the strength of will,
the power of conviction,
to stand by the dreams
that once were so near.
so dear.

i have considered anew,
played out again,
all the steps and lines
that brought me here,
but history is ajumble in my mind,
and nothing
is quite as it seems.
directions that once held merit
are now a sieve for
the vaguaries of predestiny.

so as i turn and look
into my past,
my resolve is clear.
for whatever time
there is left
i must coalesce
the essence of my dreams
with the reality of my present,
and having done so,
learn to want what i have.

about this poem:

this was written in collaboration with steve (across the atlantic, no less!) smith. he'd e-mail me a line, i'd e-mail him one back, etc, until we decided we'd finished. this is the result!
