loving father, devoted husband
by rhiannon macgregor

do these words encompass all the joys you've brought to me?
loving father, devoted husband, etched for all the world to see.
do they symbolize the laughter and the joy of all these years,
how you comforted the heartaches, how you wiped away the tears?

do I settle for these words to encapsulate the pain
loving father, devoted husband, are they all that now remain?
there is no stone upon which I could fit the words of love
spilling from my broken heart to the heavens up above.

as I lay this single rose on the cold, forbidding stone
loving father, devoted husband, you've not left me all alone,
i have a life of of loving you within my heavy breast
and I know that of your spirit, I retain the very best.

what we shared may not be witnessed by the daily passers-by
loving father, devoted husband, it's between just you and I.
those four words, they do us justice, and are not all that we share
till the day they're said for me, and I come to meet you there.

about this poem:

i wrote this poem after a friend from pathfinder informed us his father had passed away. my own father died when i was 5, so i was inspired to write one for all of us who go without a "dad".
