Many hs families have a favorite subject---ours is history. We believe that understanding salvation history is essential in helping the children develop a relationship with God and this is most easily done by studying history chronologically using interesting material.
In our corner we describe our philosophy on using books that were printed before 1920 whenever possible. History books written before that time period were usually not concerned about being politcally correct and, for the most part, were accurate in thier presentation of history. We keep in mind that many books written by Protestants will be prejudiced against Catholics, but surprisingly many also paint an attractive picture of Catholics. A source of living history out of print books is very useful when hunting used book shops or library shelves. We use several of the Catholic history textbooks as a framework in teaching history and pulling in the Catholic perspective. It's our experience that using these books alone make history appear boring and something that the child cannot relate to or remember.
Of course it is not necessary to use these older books for teaching history. There are many exciting, living books that are still in print. Greenleaf Press (a Protestant Co. which does sell a few books with that bias)publishes a catalog with listings of living books which can be used for teaching history chronologically. Beware! Do not use their "Famous Men of the Reformation" which contains much that is anti Catholic and be cautious of any books which cover time periods after the reformation. We use anti-Catholic biases in books to reinforce what we believe and to point out errors in thinking and faith. However, as much as possible we choose books that have a pro-Catholic sentiment.
Another company whose catalog focuses on living historical books and whose catalog contains extensive descriptions of the books is Elija Co.
When time permits I will be uploading material that is "Catholic friendly". The chronological outline that we use is below. We add activities to the readings from Fantastic History Site and other sources:
"Nothing is more dangerous to the survival of a free Western society than the increasing neglect of history in our teaching and our interests. Dictators always attempt to distort or abolish history. Nowhere has the rewriting and the manipulation of history been more avidly pursued than in Soviet Russia. In our free society we are abolishing the past, not by rewriting it or forcefully suppressing it but simply by losing all interest in it. This is as latal for a society as it is for a man to lose his memory" Barbara Ward
