Frequently Asked Questions

What is Paganism?

Modern Paganism is a return to "the old ways", and the "old" gods. In general, it is manifested in an attempt to "get back to nature" and to follow the natural cycles of the year, and generally is marked by the celebration of the seasonal ceremonies of our ancient ancestors. For example, the solstices, and equinoxes.

What does "Pagan" Mean?

Originally, pagan was a word used to describe the country folk, the people who lived away from the city-centers, and thus, away from the influence of the early Christian church. As a general rule, pagans were un-converted, and considered to be heathens.

What does "eclectic" mean?

Eclectic means, basically, from many sources.
The word is most often heard in terms of interior decorating, but also applies to anything where disperate peices are melded together to make a harmonious whole.

What does "polytheist" mean? "monotheist"? "atheist"? "pantheist"? "agnostic"?

polytheist = believing in/honoring/worshipping more than one god.
monotheist = believing in/honoring/worshipping only one god.
atheist = believing in/honoring/worshipping no god.
pantheist = believing in the divinity of all things, "god is everything, everything is god", and honoring all life as divine.
agnostic = believing in a higher power, but generally unsure exactly what that power is.

What is a "witch"?

A witch is a person, male or female, who practices magick. It's that simple.

What is a "warlock"? Isn't a male witch called a warlock?

Warlock is a very old word which means "betrayer", or "oath breaker". Using such a word to describe a witch is an insult. It was never a title which was taken willingly, and while occasionally deserved, it usually isn't/wasn't.

Is there such a thing as a "Christian witch"?

In My Opinion, NO.
The use of magick is specifically prohibited by the bible, and as such, a person using magick looses the right to call themselves Christian.
On the other side of the coin, a person who doesn't use magick has no right to call themselves a witch.
The long and the short of it is, the two belief systems are completely incompatable.

What is Magick? How does magick work?

Magick is, I believe, the life-force of the universe. It is the energy that keeps entrophy from taking over, and disintegrating everything.
It is an energy that can be harnessed by belief and a strong will, and made to do almost anything that the imagination can conceive of.

Do you worship the devil? Why do you worship the devil?

I've put the answers to these two questions together because they have the same basic answer.
No, I don't worship "the devil".
To be quite honest, I don't even believe that there is a "devil". I do not believe in a personification of evil. He/It doesn't even exist in the original versions of the books that the Christian bible is taken from.
"Satan" was originally a title, given to Lucifer, "the light bringer", who was an angel of "Yahweh". The word, in ancient hebrew means "adversary", and refered to Lucifer's position as a sort of prosecuting attourney, in Yahweh's court of Justice. It has nothing whatsoever to do with any later "fallen angel" myths created by early Christians due to misinterpretation of the original transcripts.

"But the commandments say..."

2 I do not worship idols or statues.
3 Who hasn't done work on the Sabbath? Do you even know when the Sabbath really is?
4 Out of respect for the beliefs of others, I try not to use His name in vain. I'm not perfect, but who is?
5 I have given as much honor to my parents as they deserved and more.
6 I have never killed or committed murder.
7 I never cheated on my husband while I was married. I never even cheated on my boyfriends before I got married.
8 I have never stolen except when I was in greatest need.
9 I have never (in my memory) lied to the detriment of another person.
10 I have never coveted my neighbours wife, or his ass, or anything else.
1 As for the commandment "thou shalt not have any other gods before me", it doesn't say, anywhere in the bible, that there are no other gods, only that the tribes of Isreal should not worship any other gods but Yahweh. I am not of any of the tribes of Isreal, and therefore, this doesn't apply to me.
Technically, none of them do.

What happens when gods fight?

I honestly don't believe that the gods are so petty that they bicker like little children, much less have any idea of what would happen if they did.
But I would imagine that it wouldn't be anything pretty.

Do you cast love spells?

Love spells are possible, but not recommended.
Magick is serious business, and love spells are probably one of the most serious types of magick.
Witches, as a general rule, believe in free will, and the use of a love spell negates free will.
Just imagine how you would feel if a love spell was cast on you, and you fell in love with someone against your will...
Personally, I find the very idea repugnant, and refuse to use such spells.

How did you create your god/s?

I didn't. And to be quite honest, I am insulted by this question.
The question is a serious insult to my intelligence, (I'm not even sure why I am dignifying it with a reply here in my FAQ) because what is the point of an imaginary god? What benifit would there be to honoring a god that doesn't exist except in my own imagination?
I don't know why it is assumed that I would even WANT to create a god. There are plenty of gods out there as it is, why would anyone want to create more?

What happens if two witches are enemies and start throwing spells at each other?

As a general rule, this is something that rarely occurs. Most witches believe in one form of Kharma or another, and as such, believe that any negitive energy that they put out into the world will be returned to them, multiplied.
Therefore, if they were to do such a thing, they would, in effect, be defeating their own purpose. The spells effects would tend, though the protections of the other witch, and through the workings of Kharma, to be reflected back on the caster.

To be continued as I get asked more questions.

I Hope This helps.
