This page is under construction. Hope you will come back to learn about the history of the Independence of Bangladesh, after a millennia of foreign rule. It will include eywitness accounts of the war. Will Bangladesh be able to climb back to the top of the world whence she has fallen?
War criminals, big or small, are tried and punished. Some have been tried even fifty years after the war. In Bangladesh, Golam Azam, a major architect of the deaths and suffering of millions during the Bengali liberation war of 1971, has recently been repatriated! In 1971, one of the worst holocausts of history ocurred in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan). In an attempted genocide, 3 million civilians were murdered and over 250,000 were raped, all within 9 months by the Pakistani army (over 20 million became refugees). Even little children or the elderly were not spared. It was the most concentrated mass slaughter in history. And the scariest part is, it was centrally planned and organised and the weapons of death were supplied by a major western superpower -- a leader of the "Free" World! The horror that was, is simply unimaginable. Golam Azam is a painful
tumor of Bangla history. A Bangalee by birth, he had publicly
prayed to God to be forgiven for speaking in Bangla, "the
language of the Hindus" and had endorsed the Pakistani war
against the Bangladeshi civilians viewing it as a crusade against
the enemies of Islam. He was also the major organiser
of the Razakar, Al-badr, Al-Shams and several other forms of militia
armies that helped the Pakistani army in every dark way possible.
Most of all the war criminals, the Pakistani army officers and Golam Azam and his men, are known and identified. Today Bangladesh is an independent nation. The daughter of the father of the nation, Sk. Hasina, is in power as the Prime Minister. Yet no action has been taken to bring the war criminals to justice. That they are still free and live like kings in Pakistan, the USA, UK, the Middle East AND even in independent Bangladesh, is an utter shame to the whole nation of Bangladesh and of course the government. It is a failure of the father of the nation and a failure of Prime Minister Sk. Hasina. If Sk. Hasina cannot bring justice, then she should resign and should be branded as a traitor of the nation. (Nothing can be expected of Khaleda Zia, the ex-Prime Minister, since it was her government that repatriated Golam Azam and it was her husband, the military dictator, Maj. Zia, who had legalized the student wing of Golam Azam. The party of Zia has long abandoned the Bangla line!) In the last decade, hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets, led by Jahanara Imam the conscience of Bangla, and the intellectuals of Bangladesh, and demanded justice and fought with the police and paramilitary forces. A people's court had been held and Golam Azam was found guilty. THe court sentenced him to death. About half a million people present at the people's court chanted his death sentence in one voice defying the government ban and the heavy police deployment. BUT Golam Azam and the other war criminals are comfortably settling down and are starting to grow roots! I salute the martyrs of '52 and '71 and salute Jahanara Imam and all those that demand justice. I salute all the struggling peoples of the wirld, And I call for justice. Try the Razakars of 1971.
