Mock Supreme Court
It was a great class. Amongst other things, we got up a mock supreme court, complete with oral arguments and conference of justices. Seen below are those who participated in Weaver v. Fort Sane College. The vote was in favour of reversal, with Rhenquist, Thomas, and O'Conner concurring in part. The chief gave the majority opinion to Ginsberg, in hopes that she would not be so fervent in the free speech bent that Stevens, Scalia, and Souter were raging about. (If you don't know what the heck I'm talking about, maybe you should read the PAPER!) Ginsberg didn't disappoint us, though. She made sure that Ms. Weaver's speech was allowed, and that the law banning it deemed unconstitutional. In other words, we had her in our collective pocket.
The two dressed down on the outside are the lawyers (arrrrgh). The girl was counsel for Ms. Weaver; the guy was counsel for the college. You'll recognize Rhenquist by his gold stripes. To the left is Stevens (note the bow tie) and to the right, good old Nino (ME!). Across the front row and squeezed between the lawyers from left to right are Souter, Ginsburg, Breyer, and Thomas. O'Conner was ill during this shot, and we didn't have a Kennedy in our group. The pictures were taken after the decision was rendered, and so you may notice the smug countenances of the justices who won out. Hehe.
