Lindy and a few of her baby dolls.

~~~~~~~~
From the time I can
remember, I always loved dolls.
Teddy bears were pretty cool too, but the dolls were my own little fantasy family.
There were baby dolls of all sizes with angelic faces and big eyes.
There was a Toni doll whose hair was combed and styled
till it almost fell out.
Of course, there was a gorgeous Bride Doll.
I even had an Arthur Godfrey doll.
They slept with me and were my children.
I talked to them and they totally understood
each and every word I muttered.
They fell asleep to the whisper of my lullabies.
I reprimanded them at the tea parties when or if
they didn't mind their manners and table etiquette.
I wiped their mouths, changed their diapers
and dressed and undressed these dolls
over and over and over again.
I felt joy and peace.....
as I lavished abundant praise and attention on my baby dolls.
They loved me unconditionally, and I returned that love in like kind.
They never fought or screamed out in anger or frustration.
They stayed forever happy,
because they were cherished and loved by
the best Mommy in the whole wide world.
ME!
My Auntie Jo was four feet ten inches tall... and a stick of dynamite!!! |
My Mom had five sisters
and they all lived close together.
The oldest sister, Jo (short for Josephine), was a single woman
who had no children of her own.
My Mother named me Lindy Jo and Auntie Jo loved me
like the Grandma I would never come to know.
She spoiled me rotten in every way...
and this love helped shape the gentle spirit inside me.
One of her hobbies was sewing
and my dolly's were the best dressed dolls in the world!
Auntie Jo cut up a real mink coat to make coats and hats
for the big girl dolls.
She made silk and satin Cinderella ball gowns,
suits, jackets, dresses, shorts, tops and pants for my family of dolls.
Lucky would be the woman today who could boast of having such variety
and selection in their wardrobe attire.
Adoring smile
This
was the last doll I ever owned during childhood.
Auntie Jo gave it to me.
Auntie Jo gave me my middle name.
She let me drink coffee with lots of cream and sugar.
She had REAL butter for our toast.
I spent almost every
weekend at her house
because I felt so safe and secure in her petite shadow.
Auntie loved me like the Grandma I never knew...
and her love was returned in like kind.
I "watched over"
my baby dolls.
Auntie "watched over me."
And angels above "watched over" all of us.
She affectionately called me her
"Doll
Baby".
This page started out to be a page about my love for
dolls.
Little did I realize, that it is indeed a statement of love for
the Auntie who filled the "Grandmother" role in my life.
The greatest treasures are those invisible to the eye
but found by the heart.
