Ballet recital for Polio Benefit.
|
I contracted a mild form of polio
when I was a little girl.
Dancing classes were suggested
as a form of therapy to strengthen weakened muscles.
Dancing was like flying without wings!
I will never outgrow my love for the graceful art form of the dance. |

I attended a one room school house through sixth grade.
There were 25 children in the room and one teacher to teach grades K through 8.
I walked a mile and a half to school each day in the snow and rain,
and a mile and a half home from school each day.
(So you young 'uns have heard this before? ... LOL)
My teacher was the most wonderful teacher in the whole world.
I obtained a quality grade school education.
The school was consolidated and closed in the name of progress.

We lived beside a beautiful Michigan Lake.
This lake connected to another three lakes by channel inlets.
I spent many enjoyable hours fishing, swimming and water skiing.
I reminded myself of a fish, as I was in the water every single day in the summertime.
I had a one person tiny power boat which was similar to the water ski jets of today.
I laughed in delight as the wind rushed through my hair as I flew over the top of the
water!
Because this lake was lightly populated, the rattlesnake population was large.
We killed many rattlers around our home.
I began to experience nightly nightmares concerning slithering snakes crawling into my
bed.
My Dad addressed this issue, by educating me in the knowledge of snakes.
I read many books and he and I began to go "good" snake hunting.
I acquired snakes as pets and learned to handle them and know
that not all snakes are bad snakes.
My nightmares went away.
I'll always be grateful to my Dad.
I'll share a secret with you today....if you promise you won't tell anyone?
I had a mean and grouchy teacher in the 7th grade...soooooooooo
I took a snake to school and put it in her desk!!!
No one thought to point the finger at a "girl".
They all thought it was one of the trouble making bad boys!!!
I never revealed the truth to anyone, until I was an adult.

Lonnie and I were teenagers when
baby brother, Lyle was born.
Of course, I had always wished for a pony or a baby sister....but ...
What a WONDERFUL surprise he was!
I had a "real life" doll to lavish love upon. |

A major love of my childhood was the love of the beautiful horse.
I spent many winter seasons playing on the floor with my barnyard sets
of animals and fences and barns.
All of the animals were named
and there were many extra plastic horses bought for me as gifts
.
I spent a lot of time at my friend, Sharon's house.
She lived on a dairy farm and shared my love of horses.
I loved the sweet un-pasturized milk and huge suppers that her Mom provided.
I loved to help with the milking of the cows and squirting warm milk at each other,
in-between squirts into the barn yard cat's faces! *grin*
During harvest season, I was allowed to drive the tractor as the hay was baled.
Other times,Sharon and I would go into the fields and catch the young bulls
with a slip knot rope around their necks, slide up onto their backs and
go galloping off across the meadow for short distances.
I suffered a compound fracture to my arm one time, when I fell off.
Sharon's Father was so angry when he found out that we had been putting
ourselves in danger by even entering that field of bulls. Ohhhheeeee
Eeeeeee!
Sharing these experiences on this farm, enhanced my love for
beauty in the simple pleasures in life.
***
I was to become an adult before I was to own a horse of my own
and that day was one of the happiest days of my life.
