Baskets

"In some parts of the world you do not see very many baskets. In other locations, the basket is as much a part of life as clothing. It is used in such an ordinary way, but in so many ways, that it is taken for granted. Baskets, as you know, can be many sizes and shapes and colors. Some are works of art. Some are utilitarian and no thought is given to how it appears visually as long as it works as it should. Baskets which are not woven well do not last long and yet some can, with care, last in museums for many, many years.

Why are we talking about baskets? It is a symbol of a container, something that holds or carries. It can be transported or placed as an item of beauty. It depends on the use and the owner's desire. Baskets, and this may seem strange, are symbolically like hearts. Think about it. There are caring hearts, and non-caring hearts - those of beauty, and those that function in just a physical way. Though the shape is somewhat the same, the symbolic heart is made or woven by the thoughts and deeds an individual carries from day to day. Some give this weaving the attention it deserves, but many give it no thought at all. Some of these symbolic hearts are heavy with much inside and some are light and airy in the weight of that which it carries. Sometimes it is good to think of simple things in an entirely different way. It gives a different view or understanding. Perhaps in doing so it changes the contents of what is carried within that heart basket.

What kind of basket weaver are you? Have you improved your skill? Have you devoted any time to it? Have you looked at the art of it - what does it appear to be? Is your basket heavy at all times? What can be done to lighten it? Perhaps symbolically, you could put in your mental basket the things that cause it to be heavy, and see how much of it has been transferred to your heart basket. Then, one by one, work on lightening the load. Weave your basket that contains your feelings and emotions well. Make it sturdy, but not too heavy. Change your heart basket, for it is constantly changing symbolically as you weigh it down or lighten it. When the basket gets too heavy, it can fall apart so balance must be used as well as knowledge of the amount that can be carried.

Your heart basket should be constantly changing. There should be additions, and there should be less within, as that which is within the basket can be given to others if it is a positive exchange. It should not be allowed to be completely empty, but should be replenished with peace and quiet. The next time you see a basket or a picture of one, or think of one, look at your own creation and see what you have created."
