Peace is an unattainable state you might say.
Peace is always just
beyond, just out of reach, always a goal, but
constantly in a state of
flux. Peace on earth, good will toward men.
Such a simple sentence,
but wisdom in a line that can be read in a
different way. Good will
toward men - peace on earth. The two go
together. If there is not good
will there can be no peace. If will is not
involved there is not as
much evidence of good, so we must use the mind
and the will to attain
the goal of good will. How can such a thing be
possible in this age of
country against country, of violence, of
insensitivity to others?
There is no easy answer. It is overwhelming to
think of peace on
earth. In one area there is conflict, another
area there is war, in
another area a sense of balance. How could this
possibly be changed?
It begins with the Self. We are so used to
looking outward. Whether it
is a job or a goal or something we desire or want
to do, it is as if we
have to see it out there. We think if we have
certain things it will
bring us peace. The pot of gold at the end of
the rainbow is how some
people see peace. If I only had ....... and you
fill in the blanks with
what you desire.
Peace is an intangible feeling, a sensing of
calm, a balancing of the
mind, body and spirit. Some practice it by
involving themselves in
different practices such as Yoga or Tai Chi or
other methods of
meditation. Some practice in by attending
churches and seminars. All
of these things help. It depends on the openness
of the person to the
discipline and avilability of worship or
meditation or contemplation.
Still, when you start from the very center of
what is peace, you must
start with the center of the self. The trick is
finding that center and
it is not an easy thing to do. Obstacles of all
kinds, hidden and
visible, block the path toward that goal. So,
what to do? It involves
a step, a tiny step, at a time. It involves
listening to the spirit
within, it involves being aware that inside,
inwardly, there is space,
there is comfort, there is peace. Take time.
Take a little time to
journey to that center. It is not an easy
journey so be prepared to go
the distance. It is well worth the trip.
