Disaster, throughout time there has been
disaster, of natural or man
made origin. This disaster is of evil origin in
the sense that it was
intended to destroy - not just the many lives but
to destroy a way of
life, to send a message of fear. When we have
our sense of safety taken
from us, it creates an atmosphere of uncertainty
that is difficult to
repair. It is not knowing what is to come next,
not knowing how to be
safe and secure, not knowing if we are stepping
into an area of danger.
It preys on the mind and creates physical and
emotional distress that
creates imbalance. The world is in a state of
unrest and those of
darkest intent are there to take advantage of
that unrest.
These are difficult times and in the forseeable
future, it does not
appear that peace is on the horizon. How do we
cope with this? How do
we come to terms with the idea that our lives
have been changed?
Extreme change that affects a nation, perhaps the
world, is unsettling
and that is where the insecurity and fear begins
to take root. It is
wise to take a few moments from the sadness and
the loss, it is wise to
calm the spirit and the soul. It is wise to
collect one's thoughts and
calm one's feelilngs in order to think of daily
living as well as
survival.
Moving through life in a stunned disbelieving way
is the result of
shock. Those who have lost loved ones have the
most difficult steps to
take. Their lives will never be the same. We
must shift out attention
to that which is strengthening and support those
who give so much of
themselves in times of emergencies. Their
bravery and those who give of
their spirit in helpful ways are a role model for
others. Do not forget
that they, too, will need solace and aid when
they get to the end of
their difficult task.
Be aware that things have changed. Be aware that
there is a different
mind set that will have to be dealt with and
incorporated into your
lives. Some freedom will be lost in the name of
safety. Trust and
openness will be changed and people will be more
cautious. At the same
time, take heart in the many examples of giving
and sharing, both
monetarily and gifts of the spirit. This will
not just pass, this is a
memory within us all. It is life changing....we
will not be the same.
As you grieve those you have lost and grieve a
way of life, remember
that there is hope among the ashes, that it may
not be evident in the
days to come, but supporting each other in a warm
and giving way will
help the wounds that many will carry. Prepare
yourself mentally for
changing times.. Be strong in your faith, be
caring of each other, and
never let the spirit hide in darkness.
