Toughness is thought of in the sense of being
strong and hard. We think
of tough and we think that there is a certain
amount of coldness there,
or we think of someone concentrating on the
developing of strength. Be
tough and what do you think of, what does it
mean? We can't all be
strong physical specimens with all the images
that go along with that.
We all are aware of physical feats of strength,
but too often we neglect
the other type of toughness, the type that is not
seen.
How can an individual be tough and not be hard?
What does it mean to be
tough? We know we are in days of trial and days
of fearful things. Our
daily routines have been turned upside down, for
now we must contend
with the unknown certainties of fighting. How
does one become tough
without losing that all important sense of being
open and kind to
others? We're aware of the analogy of the tree
that bends and doesn't
break, and even the biggest tree can be brought
down, but the larger and
stronger ones last the longest. What sometimes
brings them down are
small insects that eat away at the inside of the
tree. If we are too
tough, if we keep an image of hardness to the
point of anger, then we
can be brought down like the large trees.
Toughness is determination.
Toughness is will power. Toughness is continuing
to do what we must do
when it seems easier to hide. Toughness is
building on the strength we
have and willing ourselves to be able to sustain
ourselves in times of
trouble. Those who are tough and can withstand
much are often unable to
let down and let the emotional needs come forth.
It is important to
realize that there is no vulnerability in showing
emotion, but simply a
need for the body and the spirit to release the
feeling behind the tough
exterior. There is no shame in tears. It
cleanses and heals. Some
mistakenly believe an unemotional front is a sign
of toughness, yet we
must keep our balance, keep our sensitive side
open to the pain of
others and to our own pain.
Keep calm, stay strong, be confident in yourself
and do not let fears
overtake you.
