Balance in uneven times is a difficult thing to
do. We think we're in a
normal state as we are doing as much as we can to
be 'normal'. We have
our routines and our jobs and responsibilities
and in a way, that is a
comfort. For those who have been released from
their jobs or who have
the economic worry to contend with in these
times, it is very
difficult. When our lives are influenced in a
major way, and when that
influence is out of our control, it is
unsettling. Things are not the
same nor will they be. We cannot be as we were
as much as we'd like
to. It is uncomfortable, to say the least, to
realize how changed we
have become from the threat of terror. It is
something that is there
which we handle in different ways depending on
our basic manner of
dealing with emotional problems.
We have spoken of balance before, of staying
centered, so it would seem
strange to speak of it again. Yet the difference
is that balance is of
a different type when times are different. We
cannot expect it to be
the same as balance in times of peace and
goodwill. If we strive for
that, we may find ourselveds irritated and truly
unsettled in our quest
not being fulfilled. It is necessary to find a
different kind of
balance. The balance is one that adjusts and is
aware of the need for
adjustment. We need to be aware that just as we
feel we have balance in
changing times, it has to be adjusted as things
change..... and
sometimes unexpectedly. If we can begin to
accept the need for changing
flexibility, it will not be as difficult as
expecting the balance to
remain the same.
Most people have some sense of what works for
them in finding balance.
Whether it is a physical activity, a mental
activity, a change of pace,
a new endeavor, we all have ways to find our
'center'. In changing
times, be aware that the activity needed might
change from that that you
normally have used in the past. You may find
that you need to explore
new ways and new ideas to be able to function at
your best. It is
awareness of this change that will help first,
and then flexibility
which will help you achieve it.
These answers will not come automatically or be
handed to us. We must
find them for ourselves. Allow yourself to
consider new things and look
for small ways to adjust. It might be something
as simple as stopping
somewhere and exploring something new. Each
individual will have
his/her own ideas and will have to 'try them on'
to see what fits.
Patience is again called for so that you don't
look too hard or expect
things to happen too fast. Also, a suggestion,
realize that finding
peace inwardly is the goal, especially when peace
is not visible
outwardly. Try to share your moments of peace
with others if it is
possible.
