As channeled by Marcia Wilson

It is once again that time of year when gifts are
exchanged for many
people. We have spoken of gifts before and each
year we try to think of
something special. The time and care taken for
just that perfect gift
usually is repaid by appreciation and
thankfulness. It is hard for
those who cannot afford to spend money to give
gifts. When the stores
show the bright colored packages and the colorful
bows amidst the
elaborate displays it is difficult to think of
something that could
begin to match those whose colors shine so
brightly.
Too often we take for granted the advice that is
given each year from
many sources. Do something for someone else they
say, give to a child
or a family or a charity. We try and yet
sometimes the giving feels
impersonal. If it is to a particular group for
solace and is carefully
personalized in its giving, the gift can be
lasting in its effect. When
the gift is for someone who is loved or for
someone who we feel is
deserving, we feel as if we have somehow not done
enough if it doesn't
match the expense range we'd like to express.
Somehow we know in our hearts that the gift does
not have to be
expensive. We sense that it does not have to be
wrapped even though we
want to give in a material way. Truly, the most
lasting gifts are those
given from the heart. When someone is helped at
the right moment of
need, when comforting words are given, or nice
surprises brighten
someone's day, we feel good and we know that the
gift is as good as if
it was expensively wrapped and bought. We just
have to take a few
minutes to think of possibilities. It is part of
the creative process,
knowing how to give and also how to receive. It
can be planned or
spontaneous but creatively, we can use our
thoughts to think of those
things that will bring a smile or bring comfort
or express love. As you
shop this year, think not of how much you have to
spend, but how much
you have to give.
