For those of you wondering, 'Avatar' is an Indian word referring to the incarnation of a deity in human or animal form. But more than that, it happens to be a symbol of paradox. On the one hand, an avatar represents a power and spirit extending far beyond our own limited vision. Conversely, it also demonstrates the ultimate weakness - for while a god may be virtually untouchable, an avatar takes on the limitations of flesh.

As a person who has travelled widely in the past decade, I've found myself in the position of having to reinvent my identity time and time again. It is only now, as I settle into a new and more permanent life, that I have had the chance to merge these separate and distinct parts of myself.

I suppose that what I'm really trying to say is that this webpage wasn't designed to represent the 'real' me, but rather, the ideal as I wish it to be remembered. In the end, this homepage remains - in every conceivable sense of the word - my own personal Avatar... the pinnacle of both my strength and my weakness.

"I won, but I might also have lost. The others believed me wise because I won, but they didn’t know the many instances in which I have been foolish because I lost, and they didn’t know that a few seconds before winning I wasn’t sure I wouldn’t lose."

- William in speaking with Adso, Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose
