There are 8 Sabbats, or festivals, of the year. The idea of the Wheel of the Year is based on the insight that time and space are circular. The 8 Sabbats represent seasonal birth, death, and rebirth. They have been celebrated in different forms by nearly all cultures around the world. They are known by various names and are abundant in mythology. They are a time when witches celebrate nature, dance, sing, feast, and honor the deities of the Old Religion. They allow us to be in harmonious balance with the forces of nature.
Life is a process, not a state; and the Witches' Sabbats are essentially a means of putting oneself in tune with that process.
Why do the equinoxes skip around between the 20th and the 22nd?
Because the earth takes more than 365 days to orbit the sun. A year is
actually 365 1/4 days long. As a result, the first day of each season starts
six hours later than it did the year before.
To keep seasons in their place, we add a leap day every four years.
