BC Regiment Band
in
Holland
The band visited Holland
from April 29 May 10 to participate in the observance
of the 60th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands.
Band members
billeted with Dutch host families in the town of Goor. Led by
Band Director
Corporal Brian Smith, CD, and Drum Major Evan MacNeil, the 28 member
band
performed in a number of local ceremonies and concerts.
The band also
attended
two major ceremonies at the Canadian War Cemeteries in Groesbeek and
Holten as
uniformed, non-performing guests. The highlight of the tour was
marching and
playing as one of 20 bands along with 1,500 veterans (primarily
Canadian) and
over 200,000 spectators in the parade at Apeldoorn on May 08. A
contingent of
27 active serving members of The British Columbia Regiment (DCO)
marched behind
the band. Her Excellency, the Governor General of Canada, and
Princess
Margriet of the Netherlands were on the Reviewing Stand. The
depth and
sincerity of the gratitude of the Dutch people to Canadians for their
liberation in 1944-1945 made a great impression on all band
members.
The band
happened to
play the march State Center (by Pat Lee) at its first parade in Goor,
and was
astounded to find that all the Dutch people knew and sang the (Dutch)
lyrics to
it! Apparently, the Dutch people heard this march played by
American military
bands after World War II and made up lyrics for it. State Center
became a
regular item on the bands marching playlist, and was a hit whenever it
was
played in Holland.
