Pyramids - burial chambers
Mum and me in the desert with the Pyramids in a line behind us. First you see the queens' pyramids, then the pyramids of Mycerinus, Chefren and finally the great pyramid of Cheops at the back. We liked riding about as neither of us were particularly keen on going down steep passages to see empty burial chambers.
Apparently, the intended burial chambers of Cheops and Chefren were never finished and their tombs were robbed thousands of years ago. The bodies of the Pharoahs were brought in special boats called barques to the west bank of the Nile and then the barques were hauled up a huge ramp to reach the Pyramids themselves. I think the priests had a special place to embalm the bodies here so finally only the empty carcases, called mummies, were actually entombed. We saw the mummies in the Egyptian Museum. All the brains were taken out and thrown away, but the heart, the lungs, the stomach, the intestines and the liver were removed and preserved in special jars. oooooogh.
