Just thought I would give yet another opinion of your obviously ignorant statement about the confederate flag. You whine over and over about the evils of racism. However, I don't think that you know enough about southern history to back up that kind of statement. It seems as if you just enjoy repeating many of the cliched sayings of those that are brainwashed into believing that the South has always been filled with hatred and racism. Whether you feel that the flag stands for right or wrong, how is i your place to whine about it? Loved your page, but I can't agree on removing the confederate flag. If states (and they do) fly the flag of all occupying countries, the south qualifies in your area. (And mine) I can't hold with removing it just because the reasons for the flag are m sinterpreted. Won't get into any political discussions, but I KNOW what's in my heart, and it isn't racism. It's states rights, then, now and always. Racism (that vile poison) is not what it was about regardless what you hear. Read your history, not ju t the annotated version. About drinking sweet tea, that sounds good about now, sitting on the porch and watching the sun go down, and you seem like on of them people I could talk to for hours on end on a slew of things. There's nothin I like better than laughing-especially over weet tea. Anyway, I seen where some of our folks get a bit riled over our flag being up there in SC. When I say "our flag" I am referring to Dixie. I know there is no midwest flag our northeast flag, but that when atop the state house in SC (like it ou not) IS the flag representing Dixie (even though it is not exactly historically accurate),and as I said before flags and home are powerful things. I never thought to hard about it till May of 97. Yes, here comes a story--I'll try to make it short. I u ed to work for a police dept-I was the night dispatcher. It was a small dept here in the Atl. area. It was bout 2 in the morning I was almost asleep (shhh) when the door open and my Sgt came in, he said "you hear about the 2 shootins?" Right then, an i age hit me-I don't know how but I now knew all about them--all about the first one and I said "no". And he shortly left. I been in law enforcement for 5 years--3 of them with a big dept. and had been though it all-nothing ever bothered me-this one did. I broke down. Then at 530 came the morning news, and like I had somehow knew, they talked about a 17 year old kid shot on a bike as he rode home. I went home and cried all day, and the next, and the next, I was awake over 3 days straight with no sleep. I spent the days looking for the vehicle described in the BOLO in my own car, going all over, never sleeping, finally about the fourth day I gave all the money left in my checking account to the family as they didn't have the money to bury him. Then I went to work and passed out from exhaustion. I finally slept som . The news kept saying "it was a gang initiation, by black males". How did they know? There was no one that saw anything other than the vehicle. So I never made that asumption. I eventually made it to the cemetery, again I felt somhow that this kid w s a close friend of mine or something, but there at the head of the grave was a white cross and across it made like a bandana was the CS battle flag. I've never seen a more powerful image than that one that day. I didn't know what quite to say. I just prayed. Then from behind me came his little brother and his riends. Course they didn't know me, so I left them to be. From then on, the Confederate battle flag meant more to me than it ever has before. I feel a lot like Armistead in the movie "Gettysburg", right before he goes up the hill on Picketts charge, n ver to return. One month went by--and nothing. The friend I never knew was on my mind all the time. I went to work one night, my partner was working also and I asked her if she would watch the radio while I went to the gym. At the gym I was alone and thinking about w at had happened and began crying as I started praying like I never had prayed before, as I lifted weights. I asked my past on grandma to please, please get the killer to be caught. I had to stop lifting as I broke down again. I sat up and looked at the clock on the wall. It was 1 in the morning. Right then I felt better, I got up and walked out the door and when I did, I felt something. I can't describe it. I got cleaned up and went outside, and as I walked across the parking lot, I felt better, so elieved, it was really like I just got done taking a pack off a long march. I went back to work that night, I felt so good I let my partner go home cause she was tired. At 530 came the morning news. I heard one word "arrest". I knew what it was about. They found the guy who killed my friend--at 1 in the morning. Some dumb white boy wanting to know what it was like to kill someone. Now he knows and is now serving life in prison with no chance of parole. I've written a lot. Maybe there are some lessons from this story. I've learned a few and can't forget them. I went back to his grave and saw the headstone I helped pay for-there upon it was the Confederate States Battle flag. I can't forget that, I ca 't forget him, or my land, or what my ancestors fought for, and if I had to today, right now, I would stand in Armistead's boots and march up that hill for the flag.

You got a good site here, its good to see pride in our land. About the Confederate Battle Flag though, I think it should stay. SC was the first state to secede-(NY was the first state that threatened to secede--just a little history)and I think that tha is a major part of their history as well as the South. Yes, a few people use the flag for the wrong reason, and I have seen the 10 or 12 klansman march with the Battle flag, the swastika AND the AMERICAN FLAG. I really hate seeing the flag my ancestors fought under as well as the US flag being descrated like that. Nobody ever says ban the US flag though. And the armies that marched under the US banner killed more people and destroyed more homes, and conqured more countries than just about any banner I can think of. What about those people that are offended by that flag? Some hold it true, while others not. Let us not forget that the ships that brought the slaves over did so under the American flag--mostly to Massachusetts--that was the leading slave trading state. I am rambling, maybe it was a bad time when the flag got put up there, as far as I am concerned it should have never been taken down.

Just read your dissertation on Ol' Dixie. I tend to think that it's not so much a museum piece as a religious artifact. It really does represent a set of ideals that some people hold near and dear to their hearts. I can remember clearly how dearly my m ther (born 1911) hated the Kennedy's because she heard one of them once state that they would beat the South to its knees. I don't even know the situation in which this occurred. I was to too young to get the entire story, but I remember clearly her rai ing her skinny little fist in the air and bellowing "The South shall rise again!" Now Mamma died almost 20 years ago, and I do not hold her sentiments as my own. To me, the values which she loved most mean hatred and pain and violence to all of humankin . However, she and those like her hold these values with absolute religious fervor. Obviously, the State of South Carolina have seriously mixed religious and governmental issues. But that's not new. There's an article in a recent Post about a man who ent to trial and lost. On the courtroom wall was a large tablet containing the Ten Commandments. The man was an atheist. He is going for a mistrial because he believes that the religious statement on the wall helped to prejudice the jury against him. hether it worked that way or not, religious statements (swearing before God and on a bible before taking the stand) have absolutely no place in government. Not because I say so! Our constitution says so, and I believe our constitution needs to be preser ed. Why? Because it works. Who knows? Maybe, it was divinely inspired.
