ACTIONS ISSUES ORGANIZING TOOLS

Press Releases

Tip No.1: KISS (Keep it Simple, Stupid)
News rooms are busy places. Hundreds of thousands of press releases come in by mail, FAX and now email every day. Your job is to KISS for the overworked overburdened reporter.

One Page Rule: Anything longer than one page gets file 13'd.

The 5 "W" Rule: Who, what, when, where, why

The Local Rule: Have a local contact person, even if it's a national issue. The reporter has to have someone local to call, and some local "hook" to interest local readers.

The Quote Rule: Use a quote from your local contact, in the press release, so the reporter doesn't HAVE to call.

The Action Rule:News consists of someone doing something. Opinions belong on the editorial page.
