Dear Keith,
Scott Slone's youngest son, James, 16 years old was killed in a motorcycle wreck. He was buried today.
Billy Joe Vanhoose's son was drowned in a lake in Ohio this past week. Don't have any more details yet.
So much bad news it's almost overwhelming. We are still having Homecoming on Labor Day week-end. Lots of activities are planned. We're even having a carnival and fireworks. Can you come up with a name for this week-end each year. We could celebrate Wayland and our heritage every year as an annual event. It would be easier to plan for. Also, you're good at these things so be thinking about some other activities we could schedule for that kind of celebration. We are making progress on our 1850's log cabin we're putting in on the parking lot. My modem has an error so I can't get on line at my house right now but i'm working on it.Let me hear from you!

Dear Keith,
Patty Murphy said you might be able to post this news on the Up the Holler page. Lassia Hatcher, who taught at Wayland for many years (English, French, and Latin) and left when Maud Ellen (she was in your sister Linda's class) graduated and went to Florida because of Tom's Rheumatoid Arthrisis. Lassia was a very special teacher to all of us. You can check out the yearbooks to get her picture, any from the years l947-1957, also of Bob and Maud Ellen, her children, who have both passed. Maud Ellen died at age of 26 back in about 1972, and Lassia never got over it. Bob just died in 2000 of a heart attack. I have included the obit that her niece, Pam Terry, sent to me. Hope to see you in September. It was so good to see Kelly and Linda at the last one.

SUE HARR BARNETT TRIPLETT
Sue Triplett, 63, of Franklin, Ohio. Passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born on Feb. 20, 1939, in Lackey, Ky. And raised in Wayland. The daughter of Orville and Louise Martin Herr. She later took the last name of Barnett from her stepfather Henry Barnett. She graduated from Wayland high school in 1957.
The above is the obituary column for Sue. As with all obituaries? they leave out so much of the real person. And we certainly cannot tell all about her with a few more sentiences, it would take books, but we would like to add a few words. Sue without question was one of the most unique people anyone could have know. She was first of all a loving mother and grandmother. She took care of her children before anything else and they loved her so much. She had this wonderful personality that was so open, she never met a stranger. In five minutes you would thank that you had know her all your life. She had a talent for storytelling, the most humorous stories, all-factual. She was always the life of the party.

Hello to you,
I have just spent some time on your pages. You have held me on the pc, because your pages are most interesting. I have enjoyed.
We Kentukians need to be informative, as well as hold on to our culture and traditions. As you know our Mountains hold a wealth of information. So much love through friends and kinship can be seen on our pages via internet. I think your pages help to create a feeling of life in the mountains. All of these things bring us closer to our friends and neighbors.
Thanks

More great pictures to come. Keep checking back.
Patrick, my name is Patty Murphy and I am a friend of your mother's. The pictures, below, are actually of Lackey. It was taken from Ky 7 looking toward Wayland. The Depot in this picture is Lackey's. The store on the right is Collins furniture and hardware store. The brick building was where old lady Collins had a grocery store. The building at the end of that row was Moore's hardware. The saying around home was, "if you can't find it anywhere else go to Earl's (Moores) he'll have it.
To Keith- I am looking forward to seeing the rest of the pictures. We are working on another TURNTABLE, for Dec. If any one has anything they want to include in the newsletter please put it on this web site or send it to the Historical Society in Wayland, bx 349 zip 41666. I lost a lot of the names and addresses from the computer so if you want to be sure everyone gets a copy send me your address and any you have for anyone else.

She had a rather difficult start in life, her father Orville Harr died when she was 2 years old. Her mother remarried Henry Barnett and like all families in Wayland they went through some tough times. She went to Wayland high and played the saxophone in the band, (she also played the sax at the Wayland homecomings); She often talked about her good friends and teachers at school and in the communities. After school she married and moved to the Cleveland area, then later to the Middletown area. She worked at the Middletown hospital for a number of years before retiring; she then went to work at a Middletown nursing home, (where she actually died, on the job. As she died her last three words were Jesus-Jesus-Jesus.)
Sue was always helping people. She has a disabled daughter that she has taken care of for 42 years. She went through a painful divorce that she did not want, and through all of this she never faltered or wavered, she stood tall and never lost any of her wonderful humor.
She was a good Christian person, very active in her church. She always joked that when she died that they would have to ?flag down cars from the highway to get enough people for a funeral?. Well, that did not turn out the way she predicted. People stood in line for over two hours to see her, she would have been pleased. At her funeral the children and the minister had slide pictures of Sue?s life, from baby pictures to other pictures that covered school, marriage, babies, vacations, more babies, home, grandchildren, church. It was very touching.
She never lost her love for Wayland, and a part of Wayland was lost with her death. She was ?the salt of the earth?.
I know where Wayland, Ky is. I was a student at Hindman High School, lived at the Hindman Settlement School, but was from Perry Co. Ky.

I'm also planning on doing some interviews with some of our older citizens and others too. I hope to use parts of these to put together about an hour long tape about Wayland's history. I want you to put music and credits to it when I'm finished. Be thinking about it and send me some ideas about what I should cover.
I'll let you know more about homecoming after we meet again.

Wonder when this was taken? I notice a man with a Horse..
Does anyone have a school paper, program from a play, program from a game, anything that we can use in museum to share with everyone. I got a few responses from the last newsletter, calls and letters both. Hope to get the next turntable out this month or next. Its midnight and I'm going to have to turn in. Encourage everyone to keep in touch. It's now 1 o'clock. I lost this message and just now retrieved it. Bye, Patty.
