Community Park News

The Wayland Fire Dept. Community Park is growing again,Picnic shelters are under construction at the park this week (June 29). Hopefully in just a few weeks we will be ready to host another community event and make use of our wonderful park and the new addition. Thank you to everyone who has supported our park in anyway. Your support is greatly appreciated. In July of 2000, picnic shelters were on a wish list created by the Fire Dept. Members and the Auxiliary. At that time members of the Auxiliary and Fire Department contacted county officials to get things rolling. County officials were very receptive of the idea and after viewing the facility agreed to help. With a long list of projects ahead of the Wayland Project we were added to their list. Here we are almost a year later and things are looking good on the project. While the county is busy building what promises to be a beautiful shelter, the Fire Dept. and Auxiliary are hard at work installing a sand volley ball court. The Wayland Fire Dept. Community Park has come a long way over the past 2 years. We are very proud of our park and the people who worked so hard to bring it here. In the future we would like to fence the park in and add to the existing basketball court. We hope you enjoy using the park and all we ask in return is that everyone do their part in keeping the park clean.

Remember Linda and Steve in your prayers. Steve found out that he has melanoma cancer. It has spread to his liver and is on his pancreas. He also has lumps all over his body and they are melanoma also. If you know of any new treatments for this type of cancer let us know. Just remember them in your prayers. Pass this on to the other family members.

Day In The Park Report

The Second Annual Day in the Park was a great success. The Wayland Fire Dept. Community Park saw plenty of action this past Sunday. The days events got under way at 1:00p.m. There were plenty of hamburgers, hotdogs and soupbean dinners for those who attended. Following dinner the kids enjoyed a full afternoon of games and contests. Ribbons were awarded for first, second and third place in various competitions, such as; sack race, 3-legged race, tug-of-war and hot-shot (basketball). The children were divided into groups depending on their age and the number of children participating in each event. Each child who participated in Sundays events received a medallion which read WINNER. The children also played games such as dart balloons and there was a duck pond for the youngest children. While the kids were busy at "work" competing with one another the rest of the crowd entertained themselves by visiting with long time neighbors, friends and relatives. The Wayland Fire Department and Auxilliary are hard at work planning the next event. We hope everyone who attended had a great time and will join us at our next outing. For those who were unable to attend, you missed an exciting day and we hope you join us next time. In case any one is wondering WHY? we do this, join us and take a look around. I think the look on each childs face will tell you WHY we do this.

What a success it was!!!! There were an estimated 70 children plus parents and grandparents in attendance. There was plenty of fun, food and excitement for everyone. Volunteers spent the afternoon hiding more than 600 eggs for the youngsters to hunt. We are pleased to say that no child went home empty handed. Tables lined with cupcakes, cookies, chips and assorted Easter candies awaited the youngsters along with plenty of cold beverages. As our family approaches April 22, we think back to a year ago that day, when my brother John Slone died. We think of all those who were so kind during his illness and the sincere and loving thoughts at John's death. So many in Wayland sent flowers, food and their support to the family. We want to thank the whole town for your kindness. It has not been forgotten and never will. May God bless you all. Someone mentioned to us at the funeral, that John was an inspiration to all who knew him and I believe that with all my heart. And so many of you cried with us and told us how his illness and patience with it touched their lives. Again I thank you all.

Basketball Going Strong In Wayland

Basketball is alive and well in Wayland. The Martin Junior Pro All-Star Team for 2001 has Wayland roots. The team consists of 10 players. These 10 were chosen out of a field of approximately 60. Of those 10, 5 have Wayland roots. Those five include, Blake Salisbury, Chad Nelson, Justin Jackson, Logan Crowder and Hunter Crowder. Blake is the grandson of Linda "Runt" Castle Spurlock. Blake's parents are Tony Salisbury and Michelle Castle Salisbury. Chad Nelson is the son of Rodney Nelson and Stacy Bentley Nelson. His grandparents are Sammy and Sheilia Bentley of Wayland. Justin Jackson is the son of Nick Jackson and Kristy Green Jackson. Justin is the grandson of Ricky and Becky Green. Justin is the great-great-grandson of Sam Crager. Also with Crager roots are Logan and Hunter Crowder. Logan and Hunter are the great-great grandsons of George Crager (Sam's twin brother). Logan and Hunter's parents are Steve and Wendy Waugh Crowder. They are the grandsons of Alma! Crowder and Millard and Clara Castle Waugh. These boys and the rest of their team have a great love for basketball. They recently competed in the KY State Junior Pro Tournament. Earlier in the season they were Champions of the Martin Junior Pro/Allen Central AAU Invitation Tournament. This team also competes as the Allen Central AAU 10-under team. They will be competing in the AAU State Basketball Tournament this spring. Other members of the team are Cory Conn, Christian Francis, Blake Meade and Aaron Collins. Elizabeth Dingus was the only female player. The team would like to thank the Wayland Fountain, Castle's Grocery and the Quick Mart (Texaco) for their support, as well as the many fine citizens of Wayland and the surrounding areas for their donations. Your support is greatly appreciated. Good Luck to the team in their quest for the state title.

(The piece "Basketball in Wayland", has a slight error. The All Star Team includes 6 players with Wayland roots. Blake Meade is the grandson of Muncy Meade. Muncy attended school at Wayland and played for the Wayland Wasp Basketball Team. Blake is the son of Gwen Arnett. My apologies to the family for this error. But as I said before, Good Luck In Your Quest For The State Title. This teams motto should be: "LEAVE IT ALL ON THE FLOOR CAUSE YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU." These players give 110%.)

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!! Glad to see basketball is going strong in Wayland. Wayland should be proud of these kids. They are representing their community and heritage well. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!

There were lots of gifts and prizes handed out to those in attendance. The price was "JUST HAVE FUN". Thank you to the Fire Department and its members for this fun filled family day.

Linda Carol (Hoover) Orsik
Lagrange, Ohio
lynco@eriecoast.com

When my Dad (Ray) and Mom (Della) left Wayland in the late '50's we first moved to Michigan then to Ohio. I briefly attended grade school there in Wayland before it was a high school. I lived back by the 'firebreaks' in a duplex as we call them today. Last summer while attending a funeral my sister, her husband and I cruised around Wayland. That was the first time in many years that I had been in Wayland and it really has changed greatly. I remember what we used to call 'the fountain' and before that the script office bldg. That was such a long time ago. I actually lived most of my life right here in Lagrange. I don't remember many people from Wayland other than close relatives, like Linda Sue (Castle) Spurlock and some of the Hall families up Caney, etc. I've been trying to locate for our family tree, people or persons that are related to Ray Hoover, Grandville Hoover's son and his lost generations. Jackie Hoover (his brother) still lives near Wayland. If you know of any one who might have help in this direction, please email me. There are Sizemores and Reynolds in his family tree. This is a great page, wish I had known about it sooner. But now is better than Never! Thanks everyone.
Linda

I just wondered if anyone ever gave recognition of any kind to the first Basketball Coach for Wayland High School. He was Ova O. Haney, my father, and later became Supt. of Schools for Morgan County (16 years) and LaRue County, Ky (14 years).
Nancy Haney Reynolds
P.S. I saw King Kelly Coleman play basketball.

Hi Keith. Just a note to remind folks visiting this website that a photo of a small portion of the Moving Wall, the Memorioal to those who lost their lives in Viet Nam is still available on page 2. I was guilty of walking past the wall not realizing what it was. I seen the signs saying "Moving Wall", but had no idea of what it was. My sister Jackie Hicks gave me the photo. She snapped the picture when visiting the wall at Ypsilanti, MI.

Thanks James, and i want to add the link to this page again. Please click on link below to see a small part of the Moving Wall.

I hope everyone had a good Christmas and New Year. Mine was very good. It isn't the same when the family circle dwindles down, but we all have many things to be thankful for. Keith, please can you tell me why every time I get on the Wayland Web, I get a message that there is an error in line 223? If you can explain, please do. It just doesn't go away, and I don't know what it means. Thanks! Brenda Peek

Hi Brenda, I'm not sure what the problem could be. I'm not even sure which line 223 is. I did move some things around hoping that it may help, but not realy sure if it will. I sure hope it does.

Dec. "2000"

Hi Keith, I"m sending you this picture. I'm not sure what type of meeting they were attending, but it looks like it was at the old grade school. I know most of the names, but not sure of all the spellings. Back row; Ralph Blankinship, Guy Coleman, Kendall Pershion,Cled Turner, Josh Gray, Bob Hicks. Front row; Charlie Turner, Joe Hicks, Hawk Moore, Frank Dixon, Shorty Mount, Ike Gibson. I gave Kelly a copy of this picture the last time I was in Wayland. Thanks, Gene Honn

Linda Coleman Florian
lf@webtv.net

I think that group picture in front of the grade school was the Lions Club. I have an individual picture of Daddy taken the same day and always assumed it was from the Union, but I believe some of those guys might have been bosses at the mine so it's more likely the Lions Club. Also, an enlargement I had made of the 3x5 individual picture of Daddy clearly shows a Lions Club pin on his lapel. Thanks Gene, that's a great picture.

Linda Coleman Florain

Dec 28, 00 Now that I see the other picture of the Lions Club sent in by Jean Peppers, I'm guessing my first instinct was right. That probably is a picture of the local union officers. Daddy was the treasurer at one time.

Bob Blankenship

Just a correction to the photo submitted by Gene Honn. That is a photo of union officials. The man in the rear row is not Ralph Blankenship{My uncle}, it is Roy Blankenship {My father}. He and Ralph were Brothers.

Goldie Vincent

Goldie Vincent, 95, of Wayland, widow of John "Jack" Vincent, died Thursday Dec 21. The services were at 11am Sunday at the Steele's Creek Regular Baptist Church in Wayland.

Hi Everyone, Thought I would write to wish everyone a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. I think the older we get the more we realize the things we have to be thankful for. I hope that we all really feel in our hearts all of our blessings. I don't always do this but I sure do try. So please have the best Thanksgiving ever! Sincerely, Brenda Peek
