Many thanks to the Wayland Homecoming Committee and everyone else who ensured that the Homecoming would be a success. A success it was! For some reason, maybe because I've been fighting cancer for the last year, I wanted to attend this homecoming more than any other. I was not disappointed. There were so many friends and acquaintances and everyone made my husband and me feel so welcome. I have come home with nothing but good memories. Again, thanks to everyone.

I hope the Reunion went well. I wanted to come so bad, but my doctor wouldn't let me. I have been sick most of the summer. I had a severe asthma attack in March, followed by pneumonia in July, and again in August. I am anxious to hear all the news in case anyone wants to write about it. I hope this leaves everyone well. Georgene Little Turner

Just a thought that Jerry Fultz and the rest of you wonderful people who take care of the hotel. I noticied that there was a lot of smokers {including me} at the last homecoming and no where to put the butts. I would think it was a horrible mess to clean up. Why dont you put sand cans around the hotel? I'm sure this would help with the clean up.

When the mines closed in Wayland ,Tek and Earl along with their two sons, Earl Gene and Buddy Tom moved to Hamilton. Earl got a job at the Fernald Atomic Plant near Hamilton. They moved in 1952. More than 20 other families in Wayland all moved to the same area and worked at the same plant. Her two! sons still work at the plant. Tek said the thing she missed most about Wayland was being able to talk to people from her front porch and just the overall closeness of the town. She said at a picnic in June of this year that she would like to go back one more time. She is survived by her two sons and their families and by a sister Charlynne Thompson of Columbus. She was laid to rest in Rose Hill Mausoleum next to her husband Earl. Their marriage lasted sixty-eight years. Prayers go out to the Branham family.

Proud to be here

I saw a flyer on the door of the Fire House today. Kids Day!!! What a great idea. This Saturday the town of Wayland along with the Wayland Volunteer Fire Department will hold the first Kids Day. The sign reads Fun Food and Games 12:00 to 4:00. Please bring your children out and let them see what these Firemen and Auxiliary accomplished with their dedication and enthusiasm We could all stand to catch a little of it. It is a wonderful sight to behold, a park full of children swinging, sliding, playing tag and enjoying the time they have to be children. Thank you so much!!!!!!! I and my children appreicate your contribution to our community. I would like to challenge the citizens of Wayland past and present to help the Fire Department keep this park going and continue to improve the facility by pledging a few dollars. If every graduate or everyone who every lived in this town would give just a few dollars each, imagine what we could raise. The next time you come to Wayland and you drive by our park, stop ! Take a walk around our track, swing for a few moments or watch the game of Basketball going on. With the history we have you may very well be watching the next King Kelly Coleman! Though no one may ever be the player he is what a wonderful goal that would be for a young boy or girl in "our town".

'KING' KELLY COLEMAN IS A TRUE LEGEND'

Much has been made of the pending induction of "King" Kelly Coleman into the Kentucky Hall of Fame. I too have a story to tell.
The King was honored before the championship game of the 15th Region Tournament in March, and I was fortunate enough to sit one seat away from him on press row. After the outstanding speech delivered by John Martin and the long, standing ovation, Coleman returned to his courtside seat.
When he sat down, I told the elusive legend, who checks in at 61 these days, that he looked like he still could maybe score 30 on the teams playing that night.
He smiled, and his eyes sparkled. "I might," he said.

King Kelly Coleman, The stuff of which legends are made.
Meanwhile, The King is still not in the Dawahare's KHSAA Hall of Fame. He's the only person to ever decline the invitation.
As the story goes, Coleman was somewhat chaffed by not being in the inaugural class entering the hall, and for good reason. He is still a larger-than-life figure in these hills, even though he just returned here a year or so ago after living in Michigan for some time. The fact that he has maintained his status is even more remarkable when you consider he has largely shunned the media.
On only a slightly smaller scale, the KHSAA Hall is in the same boat as the baseball shrine without Pete Rose. Until you get the best to ever play the game inducted, it really doesn't mean a whole lot.

Thanks to James Hall for this Picture of The Wall

I would like to take this time to Thank someone who has been a great help to our town. Mr. Aaron Kidd.. Thank you very much for everything you have done with this town in cleaning it up. He gets prisoners from the Floyd County Jail to come up here and cut grass and clean up our town. People around this town should wake up and look at what he has done. Yes, I know alot of you might have some bad things to say about him. But, WHY????? Is it because he does his job and does it well I might add??
I myself think that he has done a great job. He catches the "drunks" driving through this town before they run over our kids or kill them.. I would like to take this time to thank you Mr. Kidd and commend you on the great job you have and continue to do for this town. I have lived here for many, many years and never has a police man done so much for this town, since Mr. Troy Mullins was a police man. So keep up the good work and again Thank you..

Email from Linda to Keith

I emailed my sister Linda a few months ago and asked how many of us did Doc Wicker Deliver. Below is her reply.

"I dont know if Dr. Wicker delivered all of us, but probably most of us. The only other Dr. I ever heard mentioned before him was a Dr. Pigman and he might have delivered the first couple of babies. Maybe Mary would know that. And Peggy was the only one born in the hospital and I believe Wicker made it there for that. One of my favorite memories of Doc Wicker is the time Mommy called him when u came home from playing...pale as a ghost and weak and nauseous. He came and gave u a shot, I believe penicllin, and when u were better about an hour later u admitted that u had smoked a cigarette and it made u sick. We really laughed at that one. He was a pipe smoker and almost always laid it on the mantle and would forget to take it with him. We had a nice collection of his pipes if I recall. He seemed a gentle soul."

May "2000"

Patty Hicks (Collins) Wilker

On May 8, 2000 at approximately 6:00 P.M., My son Denver (Denny) Brady Collins was found dead in his trailer, here in Prestonsburg. He was last seen on Sat. evening setting on his porch. The owners of the trailer park missed seeing him around and his baby. It appears that Denny put his baby to bed on Sat. night and himself went to bed. It also appears he had a silent heart attack and died on Sat. night or early Sun. morning. When the owners missed him they went to the trailer and the smell told them something was wrong. They broke the door down and yelled for Denny. The baby began crying. They took the baby out of her crib. Looked at Denny and could see he was dead. An autopsy was performed and the diagnosis was heart attack. They also discovered he was a diabetic, which hid any pain he may have had. The doctor said he laid down and died in peace. Denny always left a full bottle of water, a small bottle of juice in her bed. He gave her milk to go to sleep with. That forsight kept the baby alive. The air conditioner was turned off because it was cool at night. During the day it was estimated that the heat got to 120 degrees. From Sat. night until Mon. evening the baby was alone in her bed. Her name is Angel. Her room is filled with angels, dolls, figurenes, etc. I would say that her own personal angel stayed with her and kept her alive. She is only 13 mos. old. The doctor said she was only slightly dehydrated. Her main physical problem was a severe diaper rash. Denny Collins was 44 yrs. old. He is the son of the late Brady Collins, who taught school at Wayland, and Patty Hicks (Collins)Wilker of Prestonsburg, Ky., who graduated from Wayland High School in 1950.

Happy Mothers Day to all the Moms in and from Wayland..I think Sandra has a wonderful idea for the plaques. I would love to have one for my Mother and my sister Yvette..Glad to hear that you are having another Homecoming this year..Looking forward to it..

Sandra Coleman

This is a message to the homecoming and historical staff. Since there were only a limited amount of memorial rockers available I had suggested to Jerry and Bonnie that they have a memorial plague that could be hung behind the fountain counter. A small bronze plate with the honored name could be attached to a large wall plague. Our family would love to get one for our brother Phillip and I am sure that many others would be interested in honoring their loved ones. This would be a great way for the historical society to raise money and a great way to honor those no longer with us........Hope you all give it some thought and let us know.

Clova Watkins

On Friday, April 28st at 6am Clova Watkins of Lackey KY had a massive stroke. She is at Highland Regional Hospital in Prestonsburg. Your prayers are needed.

King Kelly Coleman
Kentucky's All-Time Men's Leading High School Scorer,

returned to Floyd County and Allen Central High School for the finals of the boys 15th Regional Basketball Tournament, where he was presented a Trophy for being the
Player Of The Century!
Coleman received a standing ovation from 4,200 excited fans when he accepted the award.

The "King" Is In The Building!
(by Ed Taylor)

What a treat for basketball fans who were in attendance at the final game Saturday night. Young fans and middle-age fans , who never had a chance to see Wayland's King Kelly Coleman play basketball or see him in person, were treated to a very special moment when Kelly was introduced before the final game began. Coleman was presented a brass trophy by tournament manager Johnny Martin as the Player Of The Century.
Autograph hounds swarmed the former Wayland Wasp Star. Kelly is still a Legend in Kentucky Basketball and will always live in the hearts of us who got to see him perform on the hardwood.
But i am afraid that some of the great names in Floyd County basketball and football will fade into history if something is not done to preserve their names. We need a Floyd County Hall Of Fame.

Hi, I look on the feedback page every few days to find out the latest news or just hearing what someone else has to say. I'm sorry to say that the last entry usually stays on the top of the page for weeks and sometimes longer. I wish more people would write and let everyone hear from them, good news or bad news. I think a lot of people are concerned enough to read about it. I don't get to Wayland but once a year, and that is usually for a few hours, but I still feel that Wayland is my home. I have a lot of memories of Wayland, and I will always want to keep in touch with it. So please let's try to write often. Sincerely, Brenda Peek

Pamela Fay Tuttle (Hall)

This is the most difficult note I have ever written. On November 14, 1999, my sister Pam died at UK Medical Center, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on the Mountain Parkway, November 13. Pam and I were in the same grade from the first through our senior years, and many of you were there with us. We graduated in 1961, and remained best friends until her tragic death. I never dreamed there would be a day that I couldn't call her on the phone, hear her voice, see her smile, or tell her that I loved her. I talked to her before she left home that Saturday morning, and she was excited about going to spend the week-end with her children, Ed, Vickie, Amy, and her only grandchild, Mason. Pam was always a lady, a good woman, a wonderful mother, precious sister, perfect daughter, and she will always be alive in our hearts. I am writing this on behalf of my brothers, sisters and parents (Eugene, Don, Nadine, Doug, parents-Aaron and Betty), and myself, Connie.

Drothy Watkins

Drothy Watkins wife of Oscar Watkins died this morning (Jan. 3, 2000) around 2am with pneumonia. She will be taken home and will be at Hall Bros in Martin. Burial well be on Wed Jan 5.

I just read the news about Mary Beth Fraley...I felt so sad because we were in 1st grade together. I know that it must have been a horrible shock to the family and friends and my heart goes out to them at this time. We all are subjected to the pains of death... I also want to wish everyone a "Happy Holiday" and for the people out there that know me can e-mail me if they want to keep in touch. God bless every one of us. Brenda (Cable) Peek.

Mary Beth Fraley

Phyllis (Burnett) Honshell called me last night to tell me that Mary Beth Fraley had died (Dec. 15) of Bacterial Pneumonia. She got sick really fast and was airlifted to UK Med Center and was gone by noon on Wed. She said the People in Wayland were in shock over this. Mary Beth was active in the Historical Society. I really hated to hear this. Keep her family in your thoughts and prayers. I think she had a daughter and 2 Grandchildren.
