Tore Torgersen, who has had a fantastic year, is now heading the rankings for: "World Amateur Bowler of the Year." The list is made by Bowlers Journal and the best bowler will be "selected" by the end of this year.
After his victories in England and UAE., Tore has now gained a substantial lead on his no.1 competitior, the 1991 World Champion, Mika Koivuniemi.

The Norwegian Championship, which took place in Sandnes/Bryne, is finished.

I would  like to congratulate the winners:

Paul Even Andersen and Liv Marie Jakobsen

Paul Even Andersen, or Even as he is know to all of us, impressed us all by winning his first Norwegian Championship. He was in the top the whole way and he proved unbeatable during the PP final. He came into the stepleader final as the no.1 ranked player and won the last game of the tournament with 202-182 (The scores in the final step were pretty low, but I know that the pressure the players experienced was enormous).

Liv Marie Jakobsen, came into this championship as a newly selected member of Team Norway. She was a great talent a couple of years ago, but she took a couple of years of the circuit. This year she has been back with a vengeance and have, among other things, rolled a 300 game. She beat the leading player of the tornament, Ingunn Øien (396) - (375) in the final step. Due to her performance, she will play for Norway in the E-Cup.

April 1998

April is a very busy month for the Norwegian Bowlers, and a lot of good games/tournaments were played, and a lot of nice results were accomplished.

But best performance, in my opinion, was made by Audun Kleven when he won the bronze medal in the
European Youth Championships in Wien on the 9 of April.

Kleven_s.jpg (3713 bytes)

Audun Kleven, 17 years old from Tønsberg, impressed everybody here in Norway when he won the bronze medal in Wien. He managed to stay focused all of the 24 games, and when the Championship was over he got his reward. He had an average of 204 over the tournament, which is quite impressive on the tough lane conditions. He was also selected "Player of the Tournament" by his competitors. On the first day he rolled a 1301 in the doubles event, and finished second in the singles, however this did not count as a seperate event.

The Norwegian Bowling Federation also held a new national tournament know as "klassemesterskapet". Here in Norway we seperate the players in classes according to their average and gender (i.e. Men A = 195+ average).

(So there were held eight seperate events, Men and Women Classes A - D)

And the winners were:

Men: Women:
  • A - Tore Torgersen - Frogner BC
  • Irene K. Eckell - Porsgrunn BC
  • B - John Fossum - Briskebyen BC
  • Kari Øvre - Strike BC
  • C - Leif A. Stenstad - Sandnes BC
  • Linda S. Haugen - Evje BC
  • D - Odd A. Olsen - Bryne BC
  • Tove E. Apeland - Haugesund BC

March 1998

This was a month with a lot of great Norwegian performances, but I guess it will be know as:
Tore Torgersen's Month

Togersen_s.jpg (3854 bytes)

Tore Torgersen did it again !!!

After his success in England two weeks earlier he went to the U.A.E and won one of the major tournaments in the far east (The U.A.E Open). The victory was worth $50.000. He also rolled a 300 game and got to be on of the 4 players which split the grand prize of 1 kilo gold.

January 1998

The beginning of a new year is always a busy time for Norwegian Bowlers, the major event in this month was:
The Norwegian Championship for Juniors.

The chapionship was held in Mandal, and almost as expected Jarlsberg BC proved to be the strongest with 2 out of the 4 individual medals. In Noway the junior compete in two classes according to their age, (one belowe 16 years and one   for the juniors aged 16-18).
