From the book IN THE BIN
by Lloyd Freeberg

The players can make it very hard to be a major league door [penalty box]opener and closer, too. One time I was counting down, out loud, and when I got to three, the player standing in the box started banging his stick against the glass and yelling, "Come on, let's go. I need outta here. Open it up!"

Wadda guy. He's probably the type to yell "fire" in a crowded movie theater. Actually, he's probably the type to set fire in a crowded movie theater. Then there's the other kind of guy, a guy like Joe Nieuwendyk. Nearing the end of one of his infrequent penalties, he stood up and asked if I was going to open the door or should he. I was so appreciative of his courtesy towards me, I vowed the next time he came in, I was going to count down the entire two minutes. Out loud.

"He's a great faceoff man, one of the best in the league," Florida coach Mike Keenan said of Nieuwendyk.

"He's one of the best at tipping and deflecting shots in front of the net. They got a real leader in Joe Nieuwendyk. He's going to help them."

Every afternoon before a Stars game, center Joe Nieuwendyk likes to take a nap at home from about 1-3 p.m. The nap makes him feel more relaxed and refreshed for the game.

"Everybody likes to have something [to eat] when they wake up," Nieuwendyk says.

He walks to his kitchen. He makes two pieces of toast. Then he puts peanut butter on them. Nieuwendyk can't remember when he has not had peanut butter toast before a hockey game.

"It doesn't vary very often," he says.

Nieuwendyk does not remember how the tradition got started. He thinks he stared out with plain old toast or maybe a muffin. The peanut butter toast tradition sort of evolved. "I probably had a good game that night," he says. "I'm probably not as superstitious as some people are."
