CALIFORNIA COACHES NAMED FOR JUNE 26 SHOWDOWN PLAYERS NOMINATED FOR CALIFORNIA ROSTER

Hart High of Newhall head coach Mike Herrington has accepted the position of head coach for the California all-star football team that will face the best of Texas on Saturday. June 26 at Cerritos College in the 48th edition of the Shrine All-Star Classic.

Herrington. along with his assistant coaching brothers. Dean and Rick. will end a roster of 36 of the state's top football players That roster will be chosen from among a group of 96 players who have been officially nominated to play for the California squad.

A group of 80 Texas players also has been nominated. It is anticipated that the 36 who are eventually chosen will comprise one or the best all-star teams the Lone Star State has ever seen Many top Texas players In the past have not been able to compete in the Cal-Tex game due to a date conflict with the annual state-wide North vs South game, This year's date switch of the Cal-Tex game to late June has solved that problem.

Hart has won nine league titles and two CIF Southern Section titles since Herrington and his brothers took over the program in 1989. including last fall when the Indians finished 13-1 and were ranked No. B in the state. Herrington has posted a 115-25 career record for an 82.1 winning percentage It is the ninth best record in state history among coaches who have won 100 or more games He and his brothers began their coaching Career in 1988 at Bellflower and moved to Hart. their alma mater. the following year. The Santa Clarita Valley school has always been known for its quarterbacks and under Herrington has been more dominant at the position This year's starter, Kyle Boller. a prime candidate to be one of the two quarterbacks for the California team that will meet Texas, was the 14th straight Hart quarterback to be named AII-CIF Southern Section, Others in that streak that Herrington has coached include Rob Westervelt Ryan Conners, Davis Delmatoff, Mike Kocicka. Steve McKeon. Travis Carroll and David Neill.

California’s final Roster will be announced on Wednesday, Feb. 17, one week after college football’s national letter of intent day. California won last year's game 10-5 in the fourth year of the California-Texas format and leads in the series 4-0. The Shrine All-Star Classic began in 1952 with a North-South format for California and is regarded as one of the nation's top high school all-star football games.
