Pomanders & Potpourri

This is an idea for a Craft/Recipe that I came up with while working on this here site! I thought it was a good idea and wanted to share it with you all! It combines food and decorating--he he he The 2 things I love the most about Christmas :))

The Pomanders & Potpourri captures the tastes and smells of the Christmas Holidays at my Mom's house. You can always adjust these recipes to fit your taste or the season! Use your imagination on what different variations you can come up with!

Add different *flowers, spices or herbs, or you can add some Holly Leaves and Dried Berries, too! *TIP: Beware of using any Pointsettia--too sappy and has a pungent odor--causes the potpourri to mold, too!

Now I hope you really enjoy this Craft Idea! You can, also, use the Pomanders as bases for candles by gluing or fastening them together. Go crazy--he he he!

POMANDERS

Items Needed:

    Whole Cloves
Any fruit with a tough peeling
*TIP: Apples and/or Oranges are best
Any red and/or green ribbon and long stick pins
Glass or wooden bowl, wood being preferred most :)

Directions:

Gently push the cloves into the apple or orange any way you desire
You can completely cover the piece of fruit or use the cloves springly, doesn't matter, although, the more cloves you use the stronger the smell will be
Take your ribbon and tie it around the stem of the apple, or if you use an orange or apple without a stem, take the long stick pins and pin the ribbon to the top
Prepare your Potpourri, recipe below, then put them on top.

POTPOURRI

Items Needed:

    Dried Rose Hips, and petals
    Wood chips
*TIP: You can get great ones at the Christmas tree lots--some times for free :)
    Broke up pinecone pieces
Tiny sprigs of pine boughs--Christmas tree lots :))
*TIP: Find different types of Christmas trees for the pine boughs--EX: Douglas, Scotch, etc.
    Whole Cinnamon sticks
Glass or wood bowl, wood, again, being preferred :)

Directions:

Take your rose hips and petals and kind of crush them between your hands, to release their smell :) be careful not to crush them too much, tho
Put a small layer of the roses in the bottm of your bowl
Put a layer of wood chips on top of roses
A layer of the pinecones pieces
Take your cinnamon sticks and kind of break them into smaller pieces and put a layer of them on the pinecone pieces
A layer of the pine boughs
Now kind of hand toss them all together, kind of crush to release more the smells as you mix it together
Fill your bowl about 3/4's full
Nestle your Pomanders on top of the Potpourri for a real Christmas Treat
