In November 1922 Howard Carter ,an archaelogist, was digging in the valley where the ancient Egyptians had burried their pharaohs(Kings).
Most ot the royal tombs had been robbed of their treasures centuries before. But one tomb, that of the boy-king Tutankhamen, had never been found. For five years Carter had searched , hoping to be the first to open it.Now he seemed near success.
Underneath the burial chamber of Pharaoh Rameses VI a door had been discovered.
Although shut, it had obviously been opened by robbers and then released.Behind it lay another door with the seal of Tutankhamen intact.
Carter needed to prevent fresh air rushing in and destroying the fragile remains inside. So he made a tiny hole and pushed a lighted candle through.
"Can you see anything?"asked his companion, Lord Carnarvon. For a time the archaeologist was too surprised to speak."Yes, wonderfull things," he gasped at last.In the flickering candlelight was revealed the most amazing find from the ancient world.
Piled in a room 8 meters long and 4 meters wide were nearly 60000 objects which Egyptians beleived their pharaoh might need in the next world.Gold couches, chariots, painted boxes, furniture and gold statues of the King and his servants filled the room.
Nearby was a second room which contained the King's body, enclosed in four gold coffins. It was decorated with gold collars, rings and bracelets. On his face was a life-like gold mask.Nothing like this had ever been discovered in modern times.
Small wonder the world went wild at the news.Women wore Egyptian-style fashions, popular songs were written about Tutankhamen and a record was made of a soldier blowing a war trumpet found in the burial chamber. To hear this strange, unearthy sound after so many centuries thrilled people and helped to make one of Egypt's less important rulers more famous than its greatest kings.
