Anyone can write something and make it available on the Internet. Thousands
of individuals and hundreds of organizations have written something and
placed it on the Internet WorldWideWeb, where anyone with access to the
Web can read it. What they have done is as varied as the companies and
people are themselves. Some of the most common types of efforts include:
-
Menu sites
- an attempt to list what is available on the Web for genealogy. Each item
listed is underlined in color, which represents an embedded link that sends
the reader to the referenced location when they click on the item underlined.
Click on menu sites just above to get more information about this type
of genealogy information on the web.
-
Indexes
to names on the web (some overlap with other categories).
-
Projects
trying
to make the Web a more useful tool for genealogy.
-
"How to"
sites that try to tell people how to do genealogy, how to use the Internet,
or something more specific such as how to order birth certificates or write
a letter to a German minister.
-
Software
sites - tell you about software, review software, or link you to places
where you can either download or order genealogical software (database
programs or utilties).
-
Family records
- sites where people give their own genealogies and/or family history.
-
Research
coordination and/or helplists - sites
that try to put people working in the same area or on the same family together,
or which put people together who can help each other (I'll do research
at the FHL for you--if you'll do something for me at xyz county courthouse).
-
Actual records, databases,
or indexes/transcripts/abstracts of actual records.
-
Means to contact or get information about genealogical
organizations.
-
Genealogical
periodicals - actual magazines you can read online.
-
Catalogs
of what is available for genealogy in a specific
area, on a certain surname, or for a given topic or record type (not necessarily
with links; not necessarily online).
I don't want to repeat what others
have done, so I'll let the above sites give you most of the information
you need. I would like to add my two cents on how to use Internet resources,
how to get on the Internet, and genealogy on CD-ROM.
