History

History is such a fun subject to learn and enjoy. It truly is "His" story. God, Jesus and the church play front and center in most good history programs.

With our Children we use a number Bible story/study aids. With our earliest learners we have used a picture Bible such as New Catholic Picture Bible or our personal favorite The Children's Bible. Our children once they start reading have enjoyed reading My First Bible. A good solid overview of bible History for the under fourth grade set is Knecht's Child's Bible History. It conveniently gives you many of the great stories of the Bible in short little chapters with questions to follow.

Bible Story movies are also a great way to share the Bible stories. There are a number of series that portray the stories of the Bible .Our family favors those put out by CCC and Nest Entertainment.

What about American history? How about world history? I have found that using a story and project method works well when teaching these to young children. We use a Catholic History text as our out line. I have a preference to the texts by Rev. Philip J. Furlong, Ph.D. They were written back in the 1930's and 1940's. The writing is very clear almost in story form at time. With comprehension questions at the end of the chapter. They work great when you read a chapter and then read a book about that time period. The three texts that I have found by him are How Our Nation Began, for grades 2nd and 3rd, Our Pioneers and Patriots, for 4th and 5th, and The Old World and America, for 6th-8th.

Below you will find a list of books, text books and reference books that work well. Please not I have tried to list reading level (RL) when I could and a brief description on some books. I have not used all these books but they have been recommended by others. You will also note most of what I have listed deal with American history. I hope to add world history at a latter time.
